Semarion Secures $3.8M to Scale Cell-Based Drug Discovery Platform
核心洞察
Semarion (搜索), a University of Cambridge spin-out, raised $3.8 million in funding led by Parkwalk (搜索) to scale its SemaCyte (搜索) platform for cell-based drug discovery.
The company's technology enables adherent cells to be used as barcoded, assay-ready reagents, allowing researchers to multiplex cell models and increase throughput.
Several global pharmaceutical organizations, including top 10 pharma companies, have already adopted Semarion (搜索)'s technology across the US and Europe.
Semarion (搜索), a University of Cambridge spin-out from the Cavendish Laboratory (搜索), has secured $3.8 million in funding to advance its next-generation cell-based screening technology for drug discovery. The round was led by Parkwalk (搜索), with participation from The FSE Group (搜索), Cambridge Enterprise Ventures (搜索), Oxford Innovation Finance (搜索), Found Capital (搜索), Cambridge Capital Group (搜索), and Start Codon (搜索).
The funding follows the company's $2.89 million seed round raised in 2022 and represents a significant step toward scaling its proprietary SemaCyte (搜索) platform, which addresses key limitations in adherent cell assays used in pharmaceutical research.
Technology Platform Addresses Drug Discovery Bottlenecks
Semarion (搜索)'s SemaCyte (搜索) platform combines materials engineering, microfabrication, and cell biology to enable adherent cells to be used as barcoded, assay-ready, and automation-compatible reagents. This approach allows researchers to multiplex cell models, increase throughput, and generate richer datasets within existing laboratory workflows.
The technology is designed to improve efficiency and data generation in drug discovery processes by addressing fundamental challenges in adherent cell assays. Scientists are under increasing pressure to generate more cell-based data, improve automation and drive operational efficiency, according to Jeroen Verheyen, CEO and Co-Founder at Semarion (搜索).
"SemaCytes enable them to do this within existing workflows and infrastructure, and we are now focused on translating that momentum into broader adoption," Verheyen stated.
Growing Industry Adoption and Strategic Partnerships
The company is experiencing increasing traction across the pharmaceutical industry, with its technology already adopted by several global pharmaceutical organizations, including top 10 pharma companies. Multiple pilot programs are progressing toward broader commercial rollout across the US and Europe.
Semarion (搜索) has established strategic collaborations with major life sciences tools providers to integrate its technology into existing workflows. The company has partnered with Revvity (搜索), which has integrated compatibility for SemaCyte (搜索) detection into its imaging and analysis platforms, and SPT Labtech (搜索), combining the microcarrier technology with SPT Labtech's liquid handling platform to advance automated cell-based assay workflows.
Karin Boettcher, Product Manager High-Content Screening at Revvity (搜索), highlighted the technology's potential: "Semarion (搜索)'s approach aligns strongly with the industry's growing demand for more scalable, information-rich cell-based workflows. Their unique use of optically barcoded cell microcarriers opens up exciting new possibilities for high-content screening and profiling, helping researchers generate richer datasets without sacrificing throughput."
Commercial Expansion and Manufacturing Scale-Up
The new funding will support Semarion (搜索) in scaling manufacturing of the SemaCyte (搜索) platform while advancing its commercial expansion. The investment will be used to increase manufacturing throughput, strengthen field application support, and facilitate broader adoption of the technology among pharmaceutical and life sciences partners.
John Pearson, Chief Investment Officer at Parkwalk (搜索), expressed confidence in the company's potential: "Parkwalk is excited to be supporting the development of Semarion (搜索)'s technology that has the potential to make a step change in cell-based research, accelerating a critical path in drug discovery. We are backing a team that has proven it can execute in delivering a product that works and can be adopted in customer workflows."
The funding positions Semarion (搜索) to respond to growing industry demand as pharmaceutical companies seek more efficient and data-rich approaches to cell-based drug screening. With a growing pipeline of opportunities and strong industry interest, the company is focused on broad-scale customer adoption and preparing for its next phase of growth.
