Servier Builds Rare Neurology Pipeline from the Ground Up Under New R&D Leadership

A neurologist by training with years of experience leading biological and clinical studies, Thomasson had spent recent years in entrepreneurship, co-founding BrainEver and GenSight Biologics and advising pharmaceutical companies on development strategies. Yet she found herself missing what she describes as "the marathon instead of constant sprints"—the complete arc of drug development that brings therapies from scientific strategy through to patients.
In March 2025, Thomasson joined Servier as Executive Director and Global Head of R&D Neurology, tasked with shaping the rare neurology R&D strategy and accelerating new treatment options for patients and families confronting devastating neurological conditions.
Building While Flying
Establishing a therapeutic area from the ground up, Thomasson notes, has felt "akin to the proverbial flying a plane while assembling it." The team and the pipeline must be built simultaneously, because each depends on the other—and because patients cannot wait.
To date, Servier has three neurology drugs in its development pipeline. The company's areas of focus span rare refractory epilepsies (搜索), rare movement disorders (搜索), neuromuscular disorders (搜索), genetically driven autism spectrum disorders (搜索), leukodystrophies (搜索), and peripheral neuropathies (搜索). The recently closed acquisition of Edgewise Therapeutics' neuromuscular dystrophy pipeline has further bolstered the portfolio.
Embracing Uncertainty as a Starting Point
Rare neurology is a field defined by significant scientific and clinical uncertainty. Many of the diseases involved affect small patient populations, have complex underlying biology, and lack established treatment pathways. For patients and families, that uncertainty is a daily reality.
"Their resilience, hope, and determination are a constant source of inspiration," Thomasson wrote. "At the same time, the responsibility to meet those hopes can feel daunting. Choosing to work in this field means embracing that responsibility with humility, courage, and a deep commitment to a shared mission."
No One-Size-Fits-All Approach
Thomasson emphasizes that there is no single development model applicable across rare neurological diseases. While previous scientific and clinical experience provides an essential foundation, every condition presents distinct biological mechanisms, patient needs, trial-design challenges, and regulatory considerations.
"Each disease teaches us something new, challenging us to constantly rethink and adapt our approach," she explained. "This uniqueness pushes us to think differently, move quickly, and find innovative yet rigorous paths forward."
The consistent objective remains bringing meaningful solutions to patients "faster, smarter, and more effectively."
Cultivating a Rare Neurology Mindset
Beyond scientific expertise, Thomasson argues that rare neurology demands a distinctive mindset—one that accepts uncertainty, questions conventional approaches, and remains relentlessly focused on patients. Such a culture develops through experience, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose.
As new teams join Servier, the organization has an opportunity to integrate different perspectives, professional backgrounds, and ways of working. "By bringing together different backgrounds and cultures, we can build something stronger than the sum of its parts," Thomasson said.

Thomasson describes her leadership philosophy as balancing high expectations with genuine care for the team. "Leadership is about creating an environment where people feel trusted, supported, and empowered to grow," she wrote. "It means setting a high bar while providing clear communication, honest feedback, mentorship, and the confidence that every contribution matters."
This balance becomes particularly important during the long and uncertain process of drug development, where teams must remain connected to both their scientific goals and one another.
