The partnership, signed through Sheba's ARC innovation arm, grants Israeli medical teams access to OpenAI for Healthcare and ChatGPT Health — platforms launched in January that are currently available at only a limited number of U.S. hospitals.
Calcalist reported that the agreement was signed by Nate Gross, OpenAI (搜索)'s Head of Health. A Sheba delegation is expected to visit OpenAI's headquarters in August for meetings with senior executives.
Clinical Decision Support with Verifiable Evidence
The AI models are designed specifically for physicians, aiming to support clinical decision-making and the development of patient treatment plans grounded in the existing body of medical research. The system operates on an encrypted and secure platform built to meet the stringent security requirements of healthcare organizations.
Clinicians and researchers at Sheba will be able to submit patient case descriptions and receive responses that include references to relevant studies, medical literature, journal citations, and publication dates. Each response is structured to allow medical teams to independently verify the research underlying every recommendation — a feature that addresses concerns about transparency in AI-assisted clinical care.
Early Access and Institutional Integration
Under the agreement, Sheba physicians will receive early access to advanced AI models before they are released more broadly. Dedicated working groups at the hospital will be exposed to different stages of the models' development, participate in OpenAI (搜索)'s global healthcare events, and develop internal applications tailored to the platform.
A distinctive element of the partnership is the integration of Sheba's institutional knowledge into OpenAI (搜索)'s models. The hospital will incorporate its clinical protocols, treatment pathways, and policy documents so that system responses reflect Sheba's approved standards and procedures. This integration is expected to enable future recommendations tailored to Israel's healthcare system and the specific needs of Israeli patients.
Operational Efficiency and Existing AI Portfolio
Beyond clinical decision support, the platform is designed to assist with administrative and operational workflows, helping reduce the burden of documentation and improve organizational efficiency across the hospital.
The OpenAI (搜索) partnership joins a growing portfolio of AI systems already operating at Sheba through its ARC innovation center. These include technology developed by startup Aidoc (搜索) for analyzing medical imaging and rapidly detecting cardiac events, as well as the SmartER emergency room platform, which automatically documents and summarizes clinical examinations.
ARC was established in 2019 by Sheba Director General Prof. Yitshak Kreiss and Chief Innovation Officer Eyal Zimlichman to advance digital medical innovation. The center enables entrepreneurs to test technologies in a hospital environment, promotes strategic partnerships with medical institutions abroad, and operates an investment arm in cooperation with the venture capital fund Triventures (搜索).
