The research, published in the European Heart Journal, analyzed data from 1,271,922 South Korean adults aged 50 and older, tracking their vaccination status and cardiovascular outcomes over a period of up to 12 years.
Significant Cardiovascular Protection
The study demonstrated that vaccinated individuals experienced a 23% lower risk of cardiovascular events overall, including a 26% reduction in major cardiovascular events such as stroke (搜索), heart attack, or death from heart disease. Additionally, researchers observed a 26% lower risk of heart failure (搜索) and a 22% reduced risk of coronary heart disease (搜索) among vaccinated participants.
"Our study suggests that the shingles (搜索) vaccine may help lower the risk of heart disease, even in people without known risk factors," said Professor Dong Keon Yon from the Kyung Hee University College of Medicine (搜索) in Seoul, South Korea, who led the research. "This means that vaccination could offer health benefits beyond preventing shingles."
The protective effect was most pronounced during the first two to three years following vaccination but remained significant for up to eight years. The benefits were particularly strong among men, individuals under 60 years of age, and those with unhealthy lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity.
Potential Mechanisms
Shingles (搜索), caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (搜索) that also causes chickenpox, affects approximately 30% of people during their lifetime without vaccination. The painful rash and associated complications can be particularly severe in older adults and immunocompromised individuals.
Professor Yon explained the potential connection between shingles (搜索) and cardiovascular disease (搜索): "A shingles infection can cause blood vessel damage, inflammation and clot formation that can lead to heart disease. By preventing shingles, vaccination may lower these risks."
The study utilized a live zoster vaccine (搜索) containing a weakened form of the varicella zoster virus (搜索). This type of vaccine is being replaced in many countries with a non-live, recombinant vaccine (搜索) that contains a protein from the virus rather than the weakened virus itself.
Study Strengths and Limitations
This research represents one of the largest and most comprehensive studies examining the relationship between shingles (搜索) vaccination and cardiovascular disease (搜索), investigating 18 different types of cardiovascular conditions while accounting for various health conditions, lifestyle factors, and socioeconomic status.
However, the researchers acknowledge several limitations. "As this study is based on an Asian cohort, the results may not apply to all populations," Professor Yon cautioned. "Since the live zoster vaccine (搜索) is not suitable for everyone, more research on the recombinant vaccine (搜索) is needed."
The team also noted that while they conducted rigorous analysis, the study does not establish a direct causal relationship between vaccination and reduced cardiovascular risk, and potential bias from other underlying factors should be considered.
Future Research Directions
Professor Yon and his colleagues plan to extend their research to study the impact of the newer recombinant shingles (搜索) vaccine to determine if it provides similar cardiovascular benefits.
The findings suggest that shingles (搜索) vaccination may offer dual protection—preventing the painful condition itself while simultaneously reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular events, particularly in higher-risk populations.
