The randomized, multicentre European clinical study marks the first direct head-to-head comparison of the Cocoon PFO Occluder (搜索) and the Amplatzer PFO Occluder (搜索) family in adults undergoing transcatheter patent foramen ovale (搜索) (PFO) closure. The enrolling site is led by Principal Investigator Dr. med. Werner Scholtz, and the first patient was enrolled on 24 July 2026.
Patent foramen ovale (搜索) is a common heart defect impacting approximately 25% of adults globally. A PFO is a small opening that can cause blood clots to travel to the brain and potentially lead to stroke. These defects are typically treated using occluders, which are catheter-based devices designed to close abnormal openings in the heart.
Trial Design and Scope
The SAFE-PFO trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT07380490) plans to enroll up to 1,260 patients at approximately 60 centres across Europe. Patients will be randomly assigned to receive either the Cocoon PFO Occluder (搜索) or a device from the Amplatzer PFO Occluder (搜索) family. Each patient will be monitored for 12 months, and recruitment across the full study is expected to take about two years.
