The Social Security Administration (搜索) (SSA) announced on Tuesday the addition of 14 serious medical conditions to its Compassionate Allowances (CAL) list, a program designed to fast-track disability benefit applications for individuals with rare, life-threatening, or otherwise severe diagnoses. With this expansion, the list now encompasses 314 conditions and has facilitated the approval of benefits for more than 1.2 million people since the program's inception in 2008.
"Social Security is strengthening our disability programs and making the disability determination process better, faster, and higher-quality to serve the American public," said Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano. "The Compassionate Allowances initiative cuts through red tape and allows us to deliver support to individuals who experience life-changing diagnoses and need help fast."
Newly Added Conditions Span Rare Cancers and Genetic Disorders
The 14 newly added conditions include a range of rare pediatric, neurological, and oncologic disorders. Among them are Aicardi syndrome (搜索), a genetic condition that primarily affects girls; Bohring-Opitz syndrome (搜索); CASK-related gene disorders (搜索); hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (搜索); Lafora disease (搜索); primary cardiac sarcoma (搜索); primary intracranial malignant melanoma (搜索); and uveal melanoma with metastases (搜索), along with several other rare genetic and neurological conditions.
How the Compassionate Allowances Program Works
The CAL program, established in 2008, uses technology to scan disability applications for qualifying conditions, allowing certain claims to receive approval within days. By contrast, a standard disability application typically requires between three and eight months for a determination, according to the SSA.
Through its Health IT program, the agency can securely receive electronic medical records for some claims, enabling adjudicators to render faster and more accurate decisions. However, the electronic records system is not available for every claim, and applicants must still provide medical documentation confirming their diagnosis.
This latest expansion follows the addition of 13 conditions last year, which had brought the CAL list to 300 conditions. At that time, more than 1.1 million individuals had received benefits through the accelerated process.
Broader Context for Social Security
The expansion arrives amid ongoing financial pressures facing the Social Security system. The Social Security Board of Trustees has projected that the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund will deplete its reserves in the fourth quarter of 2032, after which incoming revenue would cover approximately 78% of scheduled retirement and survivor benefits.
