Spago Nanomedical's Tumorad-01 Hits MTD Endpoint, Pivots to Head and Neck Cancer

Spago Nanomedical (搜索) AB (STO:SPAGO.ST) reported that the independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) of its Tumorad-01 study has determined that one of the study's primary endpoints—identifying the maximum tolerated dose (MTD)—has been met. The DMC recommended enrolling an additional two patients at the 15 MBq/kg (fractionated) dose level to provide a basis for defining a recommended phase II dose (RP2D) and completing the phase I portion of the study.
The announcement, made in the company's interim report for January–June 2026, marks a decisive step for the Tumorad program, which is evaluating the investigational radiopharmaceutical ¹⁷⁷Lu-SN201 in patients with advanced cancer. In early May, the company reported that a total of 15 patients with advanced cancer had been dosed, with dose escalation reaching up to 20 MBq/kg.
Clinical Progress and Proof-of-Concept
Significant visible tumor uptake of ¹⁷⁷Lu-SN201 was observed in an additional patient with head and neck cancer (搜索), which the company said strengthens proof-of-concept for the Tumorad program. "The clinical picture which has emerged during phase I so far remains unchanged and forms an important part of a foundation we are now continuing to build on," said Mats Hansen, CEO of Spago Nanomedical (搜索) AB.
The Principal Investigator and Associate Professor Kim Taubman of St. Vincent's Hospital in Australia presented the ongoing phase I/IIa Tumorad-01 study with ¹⁷⁷Lu-SN201 at the 56th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine (ANZSNM), held in Canberra on 15–17 May 2026.
Strategic Focus on Head and Neck Cancer
Based on the emerging clinical data, Spago Nanomedical (搜索) intends to advance Tumorad with a primary focus on head and neck cancer (搜索), the indication area where the company has generated its strongest clinical data and observed repeated instances of tumor uptake. Within this space, the company views adenoid cystic carcinoma (搜索) (ACC)—a tumor type where significant uptake was observed early on—as a well-defined starting point for continued development.
ACC is a rare but aggressive tumor type that primarily arises in the salivary glands within the head and neck region. The disease often grows slowly but carries a high rate of recurrence and spreads to other organs. For patients with recurrent or metastatic disease, there is currently no approved systemic treatment, and the medical need is significant.
"With Tumorad, we see the potential to offer a new type of treatment, alongside opportunities to expand into additional tumor types within the head and neck area, which could progressively broaden the commercial potential," Hansen stated.
Orphan Drug Opportunity
ACC represents a typical orphan drug indication, which the company noted opens several development and market advantages. In the US, Orphan Drug Designation provides seven years of market exclusivity after approval, tax credits for clinical trials, and exemption from significant FDA application fees. The company indicated that the orphan drug pathway can be combined with expedited regulatory procedures it is pursuing.
Financing and Governance
During the quarter, Spago Nanomedical (搜索) completed a rights issue that subscribed to approximately 93.1 percent, providing the company with approximately SEK 15.0 million before issue costs. The proceeds are intended to finance the completion of phase I of Tumorad-01 and preparations for phase IIa.
At the Annual General Meeting, Alan Raffensperger was re-elected as Chairman of the Board, alongside re-elected board members Mikael von Euler, Kari Grønås, and Nicklas Westerholm, and newly elected members Peter Lindell, Mikael Lönn, and Tiel Ridderstad.
Financial Position
For the April–June quarter, net sales amounted to KSEK 0 (KSEK 81), with a loss of KSEK -7,331 (KSEK -6,964) and operating expenses of KSEK -8,418 (KSEK -8,291). Cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter totaled KSEK 32,508 (KSEK 18,517). For the half-year period, net sales amounted to KSEK 22 (KSEK 419), with a loss of KSEK -14,128 (KSEK -14,399).
