Rapid Ring Vaccination Strategy Proves Effective Against Ebola
A comprehensive study conducted during the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reaffirmed the effectiveness of the ring vaccination strategy. This approach involves vaccinating the immediate contacts and contacts-of-contacts of individuals who have contracted Ebola, alongside implementing standard infection control measures. The study found that this strategy significantly reduces the emergence of new Ebola cases within 10 days of vaccination.

The study utilized the single-dose, live-replicating rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP vaccine (Ervebo) and established 1,853 rings of vaccination around new cases or clusters within 21 days after symptom onset in the index case. A total of 265,183 participants were vaccinated during the outbreak, with 102,515 monitored for safety on days 0, 3, and 21 post-vaccination.
