Superbrewed Food Launches Thryvia, a Shelf-Stable Protein-Derived Postbiotic for Gut and Immune Health

Superbrewed Food (搜索) has commercially launched Thryvia (搜索), a heat-killed, non-viable Clostridium tyrobutyricum (搜索) postbiotic for digestive and immune health products.

The launch is backed by a growing suite of scientific evidence and the manufacturing expertise of German ingredient supplier Döhler (搜索), which is also an investor through its venture capital arm.
Thryvia (搜索) is made from heat-killed, non-viable Clostridium tyrobutyricum (搜索) and is stable at room temperature. Because it contains no live organisms, it does not carry the handling constraints that come with keeping probiotics alive through manufacturing, distribution, and shelf life. Superbrewed says this allows brands to work the ingredient into capsules, powders, gummies, bars, and drinks, including shelf-stable and UHT formats, at a typical rate of around 200 mg per serving.
Regulatory Status and Strain Specificity
The ingredient received a "No Questions" letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Superbrewed's specific strain, designated ASM 19, has FDA-reviewed GRAS status, confirming its safety. As with many species of bacteria used in food production and that live within the gut, the specific strain is of primary importance; under the wrong circumstances, the presence of C. tyrobutyricum can be a problem, but the ASM 19 strain has been reviewed and confirmed as safe.
Mechanism of Action: A Protein-Derived Postbiotic
The discovery process has yielded insights into the ingredient's mechanism. "The ingredient as a whole is actually more than 85% protein," Superbrewed CEO Bryan Tracey told SupplySide Supplement Journal. "We find it's the protein that is the mechanism that is providing the activity in the gut." This is the root of the company's assertion that Thryvia (搜索) is a "protein-derived" postbiotic.
According to Superbrewed, its research demonstrates selective activation of the pattern-recognition receptors TLR2, TLR5, and NOD2, which are important components of the immune system. The efficacy of the heat-killed ingredient when used as a postbiotic is, according to the company, being verified through a series of preclinical and pilot studies, with more focused research ongoing.
Clinical and Consumer Evidence
Superbrewed completed a four-week consumer study that reported perceived improvements in digestive comfort, with further human trials underway. A four-week tolerability and consumer perception study showed good results on a host of parameters relating to gut health and comfort. As with any company-supplied research, these results come from Superbrewed and its partners rather than independent verification.
Manufacturing and Commercialization Strategy
The production of the ingredient was pioneered and perfected by Döhler (搜索), which is based in Darmstadt, Germany and has locations around the globe. Tracey said Superbrewed's ingredient is being produced in one of Döhler's European plants, which is an important differentiator. Fermented ingredients made in North America are typically produced using GMO carbohydrates, Tracey said, while Superbrewed's ingredient is produced in such a way as to make future non-GMO certification a realistic possibility.
Mike Bush, former president and CEO of Ganeden (搜索) and former board member of the International Probiotics Association (IPA), emphasized the importance of the production partnership. "It's an inexpensive fermentation process," Bush said. He noted that some new ingredients with compelling scientific evidence can falter because they are too costly to produce, making the resulting products too expensive to attract consumer loyalty.
Leadership and Market Positioning
Superbrewed has appointed microbiome industry figure Michael Bush as co-chairman of its board to support Thryvia (搜索)'s commercialization. Bush previously served as president and CEO of probiotic ingredient supplier Ganeden (搜索), whose branded GanedenBC30 platform was used across hundreds of products before the company's 2017 merger with Kerry.
