Swiss Pharma Giants Pour $27 Billion into U.S. Operations Following Tariff Agreement
核心洞察
Swiss companies invested $27 billion in the United States between January and April 2025, according to an internal Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce email reported by NZZ am Sonntag.
The investment surge follows a November 14 agreement reducing U.S. punitive tariffs on Swiss goods from 39% to 15%, with Swiss firms pledging $200 billion over five years.
Novartis announced a biomedical research center in San Diego and a cancer-drug production facility in Texas, while Roche is expanding manufacturing output in North Carolina.
Swiss companies have committed $27 billion in investments to the United States between January and April 2025, as the Alpine nation moves to fulfill a pledge to sharply increase investment following a landmark tariff agreement with Washington, according to an internal email from the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce obtained by NZZ am Sonntag.
The investment figures, reported on June 7, reflect the early stages of a broader commitment made on November 14, 2024, under which Swiss firms agreed to inject $200 billion into the U.S. economy over five years. That pledge formed part of a preliminary agreement in which U.S. President Donald Trump reduced punitive tariffs on Swiss goods to 15% from 39%, after having imposed the higher rate at the beginning of August 2024.
"We are model students and we fulfil our promises," Swiss Amcham Chief Executive Rahul Sahgal was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
Pharmaceutical and Biotech Investments Lead the Charge
Among the most significant commitments, Novartis has announced two major U.S. projects: a biomedical research center in San Diego and a cancer-drug production facility in Texas. These investments underscore the Swiss pharmaceutical giant's deepening manufacturing and R&D footprint in the United States.
Roche, another Swiss healthcare heavyweight, is expanding its production output in North Carolina, further strengthening the pharmaceutical manufacturing corridor in the southeastern United States. Medical technology company Ypsomed (搜索) is also contributing to the investment wave, constructing a new factory in the state.
Broader Industrial and Logistics Commitments
Beyond the life sciences sector, the investment surge spans multiple industries. Shipping and logistics group MSC is establishing a new North American headquarters in Miami, with the newspaper noting that this also covers spending on cruise and logistics operations.
Industrial companies are likewise expanding their U.S. presence. Machine tool maker Pfiffner Group (搜索) and electronics firm Elma (搜索) are both scaling up U.S. production capacity, reflecting a broader manufacturing expansion trend among Swiss industrial firms.
Ongoing Trade Dynamics
The investment momentum comes amid continued trade policy developments. Washington this week announced new tariffs against countries it says are not doing enough to combat forced labor. Under that measure, the U.S. plans a 12.5% tariff on Swiss goods, compared with 10% for EU goods, the newspaper reported.
The $27 billion in investments recorded over the first four months of the year suggests Swiss companies are moving rapidly to meet the five-year, $200 billion target established in the November agreement, with pharmaceutical and biotech firms playing a central role in the cross-Atlantic capital flow.
