Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (搜索) has officially opened Telix Manufacturing Solutions North Melbourne (TMSNM), a multi-million dollar facility that represents a first for Australia: a single site where radiopharmaceuticals are developed, manufactured, and administered to patients. The opening, announced on July 16, 2026, marks a significant expansion of Australia's sovereign capability in one of the fastest-growing domains of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The purpose-built facility combines radiochemistry laboratories, clinical product manufacturing, patient dose administration, and imaging under one roof. This integrated model is designed to address a critical bottleneck in the field — the need to manufacture and administer radiopharmaceutical doses in close proximity to patients due to the short half-lives of many isotopes used in these treatments.
Bridging Research and Clinical Care
Patient care and research at TMSNM will be delivered by the Melbourne Theranostic Innovation Centre (MTIC), led by world-renowned nuclear medicine clinician-researcher Professor Rod Hicks. The collaboration between Telix and MTIC encompasses Telix-sponsored studies, investigator-initiated trials, and select third-party collaborations.
"Bringing these capabilities together will give clinicians faster access to novel radiopharmaceuticals and allow emerging technologies to be assessed in a real-world clinical setting," said Professor Rod Hicks, MTIC Founder, Chair and Chief Medical Officer. "It will help us select patients more precisely, measure treatment response and generate evidence more quickly as we evaluate new targets and next generation isotopes and treatment approaches."
Dr. Christian Behrenbruch, Telix Managing Director and Group CEO, emphasized the strategic importance of the investment: "Radiopharmaceuticals are fast becoming an important part of cancer care, but manufacturing capacity for novel treatments, which needs to be near patients, remains a constraint in Australia. This facility will allow us to move new treatments from research into the clinic and patient use more efficiently. It is also an investment in Australia's sovereign manufacturing capability and the specialist workforce needed to build a globally competitive radiopharmaceutical industry."
The Sixth Pillar of Cancer Care
Radiopharmaceuticals — agents that can both reveal tumor locations on diagnostic scans and deliver therapeutic radiation directly to cancer cells — are rapidly emerging as what the field describes as the 'sixth pillar' of cancer care, alongside surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. This theranostic approach pairs precision diagnostics with targeted therapy, enabling clinicians to identify patients most likely to benefit from a given treatment and then deliver that treatment with high specificity.
Workforce Development and Global Context
Beyond its clinical and research functions, TMSNM will support training in nuclear medicine, radiochemistry, engineering, and clinical research, helping to build the specialist workforce required by Australia's health and life sciences sector.
The North Melbourne site joins Telix's global manufacturing network, Telix Manufacturing Solutions (TMS), which spans 45 facilities across five continents. This network includes TMS Brussels South — one of Europe's largest radiopharmaceutical production facilities with nine GMP manufacturing lines and two cyclotrons — and TMS Yokohama, Telix's first cyclotron facility in the Asia Pacific region. In the United States, Telix's RLS network delivers more than 2.5 million patient doses annually.
Telix's commercial portfolio is anchored by its prostate cancer (搜索) imaging franchise, including Illuccix, available in 22 countries, and Gozellix (搜索), its next-generation PSMA (搜索)-PET imaging agent approved by the U.S. FDA.
