A three-minute brainwave test has demonstrated the ability to detect memory problems linked to Alzheimer's disease (搜索) long before people typically receive a diagnosis, according to results from a clinical trial conducted by researchers at the Universities of Bath and Bristol. The Fastball EEG test could potentially help identify patients most likely to benefit from newly approved Alzheimer's treatments.
Trial Results Show Promise for Early Detection
The trial involved 54 healthy adults and 52 patients with mild cognitive impairment (搜索) (MCI), a condition where people experience problems with memory, thinking, or language that are not severe enough to interfere with daily activities. The Fastball test uses small sensors placed on the scalp to record electrical brain activity while participants watch images flash on a screen.
During the test, volunteers first viewed eight images and were asked to name them, without being specifically instructed to remember them. Researchers then monitored brain activity as participants watched hundreds of images appear for one-third of a second each, with every fifth picture being one of the eight previously shown images.
The study found that participants with amnestic MCI (搜索), which primarily affects memory for objects, showed reduced brain responses compared to both healthy adults and those with non-amnestic MCI (搜索). This distinction is clinically significant because people with amnestic MCI are many times more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease (搜索) than those with non-amnestic MCI.
"This shows us that our new passive measure of memory, which we've built specifically for Alzheimer's disease (搜索) diagnosis, can be sensitive to those individuals at very high risk but who are not yet diagnosed," said Dr. George Stothart, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Bath who developed the test.
Technology Advantages and Accessibility
The Fastball EEG system offers several advantages over current diagnostic approaches. All tests were performed in participants' homes, which Stothart noted was important for accessibility and reducing patient anxiety. The device is a 'dry' EEG system that eliminates the need for gel application, skin preparation, and cleanup procedures required by traditional lab-based equipment with wet electrodes.
Cumulus Neuroscience (搜索) notes that the test is passive, meaning results are not affected by anxiety levels, education levels, or language skills - factors that can influence traditional cognitive assessments currently used for Alzheimer's diagnosis.
Large-Scale Study Planned
Building on these initial results, Cumulus Neuroscience (搜索) has partnered with the Universities of Bristol and Bath to conduct a major 1,000-subject study of the Fastball EEG test. This larger trial, funded by a grant from the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Research (搜索) (NIHR), will be the largest study of its kind conducted to date in Alzheimer's research.
The expanded study will also incorporate blood-based biomarkers for Alzheimer's dementia (搜索), which when combined with EEG data, could potentially offer what the company describes as a "definitive diagnosis" for the condition.
Clinical Implications and Future Applications
The timing of this research coincides with the emergence of disease-modifying Alzheimer's therapies such as donanemab and lecanemab reaching the market. While the test cannot definitively identify who will develop Alzheimer's disease (搜索), it could help doctors assess which patients are at high risk and would benefit most from these new treatments.
"Today, many patients living with Alzheimer's dementia (搜索) wait up to 20 years to receive a diagnosis," said Brian Murphy, Cumulus's founder and chief scientific officer. "The pen and paper-based assessments currently used by physicians have limitations, since they lack the objective physiological data that only an EEG can provide."
Prof. Vladimir Litvak of UCL's Queen Square Institute of Neurology described the work as "an early step towards developing a clinically useful test," noting that a crucial next step would be determining whether the test can predict how a person's condition changes over time and inform treatment decisions.
Dr. Julia Dudley of Alzheimer's Research UK (搜索) emphasized the importance of early detection, stating: "New Alzheimer's treatments are proving to be more effective when given at earlier stages in the disease, therefore earlier diagnosis is key for people to benefit from this."
The research findings have been published in Brain Communications, with larger trials currently underway to validate the technology's clinical utility.
