Tokyo Startup Seeks Approval for First AIM-Based Drug to Treat Chronic Kidney Disease in Cats

A Tokyo-based pharmaceutical startup has taken a major step toward delivering the first approved treatment for chronic kidney disease (搜索) (CKD) in cats, submitting an application for manufacturing and sales approval to Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in April. The drug, developed by the Institute for AIM Medicine (搜索), could receive regulatory clearance as early as this year, according to Toru Miyazaki, president and director of the organization.
The application marks a significant milestone for veterinary medicine, as CKD in cats currently has no established treatment. The disease commonly develops as cats age, leading to progressive decline in kidney function, loss of appetite, and, in advanced stages, neurological symptoms and death.
A Novel Mechanism Targeting the AIM Protein
The drug was developed by focusing on apoptosis inhibitor of macrophage, or AIM, a protein discovered in human blood that plays a critical role in helping the body clear waste products. By leveraging this natural cleanup mechanism, the therapy aims to preserve kidney function in affected cats.
Clinical trials were conducted at animal hospitals across Japan, enrolling cats whose kidney disease had already progressed to some extent. According to the startup, cats that received the medication maintained indicators of kidney function, and their six-month survival rate improved significantly compared with those that did not receive the treatment.
From Feline Health to Human Medicine
Miyazaki, who is both the firm's representative and a physician, emphasized the urgency of bringing the drug to market. "I hope to put the drug on sale as soon as possible," he said, underscoring the distress experienced by both cats suffering from the disease and their owners.
The development has implications beyond veterinary medicine. Miyazaki voiced hopes to start a clinical trial for a renal disease treatment for humans soon, suggesting that the AIM-based approach could eventually address a broader unmet medical need in nephrology.
The drug's approval application, backed by strong support from cat owners, now awaits review by Japanese regulatory authorities.
