UAB and MUSC Earn Top-Tier Rankings in Inaugural Cure Innovation Index for Biomedical Translation

The Cure (搜索) Innovation Index is the first national, data-driven platform evaluating how effectively institutions convert scientific discovery into therapies, companies, and measurable health outcomes across 25 indicators.
UAB demonstrated particular strength in market translation and entrepreneurial readiness, while MUSC earned "Excellent" ratings in cutting-edge science, facilities and equipment, faculty engagement, and industry connections.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) have both secured positions among the nation's top biomedical innovation institutions, according to the inaugural 2026 Cure (搜索) Innovation Index. UAB placed No. 42 and MUSC ranked No. 44 out of 303 leading institutions evaluated across the United States, placing both universities in the top 15% of ranked institutions nationwide.
The Cure (搜索) Innovation Index, developed by Cure in collaboration with a multidisciplinary group of experts across academia, industry, and government, represents the first national, data-driven platform designed to assess how effectively U.S. biomedical research institutions convert discovery into therapies, companies, and measurable health outcomes. The index evaluated 303 leading institutions — 243 universities and 60 institutes and centers spanning all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico — selected from more than 6,000 nationwide.
The methodology integrates validated data from more than a dozen federal and commercial sources, complemented by proprietary inputs from surveys of more than 3,000 researchers and industry leaders, as well as institutional audits assessing infrastructure, technology transfer capabilities, and translational programs. Analytical support was provided by Deerfield Intelligence, a division of Deerfield Management Company.
Three Domains of Evaluation
The Index evaluates institutions across 25 indicators within three core domains. Research capabilities encompass the scientific strength, infrastructure, and funding base that enable institutions to produce high-impact biomedical discoveries. Entrepreneurial readiness measures how effectively institutions prepare and support researchers to pursue biomedical innovation and commercialization through training, mentorship, and entrepreneurship-focused programs. Market translation assesses how successfully institutions convert scientific discoveries into real-world health innovation through technology transfer, industry collaboration, patents, and translational impact.
"While traditional measures emphasize funding, publications or patents, the Index sets a new standard by evaluating the full set of capabilities required to move innovation from concept to cure (搜索)," said Cure CEO Seema Kumar.
UAB: Strength in Market Translation and Entrepreneurship
According to the ranking, UAB shows its greatest strength in market translation and entrepreneurial readiness, where it places in the upper tier of ranked universities. UAB is among the top five public institutions in the Southeast named, the only public university in the Deep South in the top 50, and the youngest university ranked in the Index's top tier.

UAB's Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (HIIE), the university's technology transfer and commercialization office, has helped launch more than 20 UAB startups in the last five years alone. The HIIE has established the Blazer Bridge Fund, which provides early-stage translational funding to advance novel intellectual property and position technologies for licensing or IP protection, and the Blazer App Accelerator, which offers training, mentorship, and hands-on support for validating software and app concepts.
In 2025, Accelerator cohort member Kristine Lokken, Ph.D., of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology, received a Blazer Bridge Fund award and developed a program aimed at preventing cognitive decline. The HIIE also helped launch PreciPS, a company developing scalable, web-based tools and training to help health system teams address operational challenges, founded by Rick van Pelt, M.D., chief clinical transformation officer at UAB Hospital.
Southern Research (搜索), a UAB affiliate, plays a critical role through its Station 41 incubator, now home to five UAB faculty startups and many non-UAB startups, providing affordable lab space and equipment, access to business development resources, and networking opportunities during early commercialization.

MUSC: A Decade of Strategic Investment
MUSC placed 44th overall, the highest-ranked university in South Carolina, positioning it among the top 15% of ranked institutions nationwide. The university demonstrated strong performance across all three domains, earning "Excellent" ratings in four key areas: cutting-edge science, facilities and equipment, faculty engagement, and industry connections.
"We knew that we were making good progress and have been extraordinarily proud of the outcomes and the progress that we've made over the last decade. It's always rewarding and gratifying to get external validation as well," said MUSC's chief innovation officer Jesse Goodwin, Ph.D. "It's one thing to say something about yourself. It's another thing to have someone else say it about you, too. And when it's backed up by data, it's even better."
MUSC's innovation ecosystem allows anyone in the enterprise to submit an idea for consideration and see it developed through implementation, supported by the Zucker Institute for Innovation Commercialization. To further support innovators, MUSC recently launched its first venture fund, 1824 Health Ventures, which has committed $20 million to support strictly internal startups over the next five years.
"Innovation follows discovery, and that discovery component is the research component. And so, the output from the innovation group is a direct follow-through of the incredible research that we're also doing," said MUSC's vice president of Research Timothy Stemmler, Ph.D. "This shows the impact that the innovation group is really having on the MUSC landscape."
MUSC has also cultivated strategic partnerships with Siemens Healthineers (搜索), Medtronic, and Helix (搜索). "Nearly a decade ago, MUSC made a deliberate decision to pursue strategic partnerships that could help us to expand our capabilities, accelerate discovery and serve the people of South Carolina more robustly," said Wendy Minor, executive director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships and External Affairs. "The success we're seeing today is a reflection of that vision."
As both institutions continue to expand their research enterprises and commercialization efforts, the rankings signal growing momentum in translating discovery into better care and improved health outcomes for patients across their respective regions and beyond.
