The facility, inaugurated on Friday, is expected to create approximately 150 jobs and represents a strategic move to bring gene therapy production capabilities in-house.
Advanced Manufacturing Capabilities
The new facility features a 1,200-square-meter pilot plant equipped with flexible single-use bioreactors of 200L and 500L capacity, enabling production of up to 15 batches per year. The manufacturing operations are supported by completely robotized fill-and-finish lines designed to minimize human error and maximize safety standards.
"An automated line ensures the filling and finishing of the products, whilst a digital system allows the processes to be monitored in real time," the company explained. The facility operates through a fully integrated digital ecosystem providing real-time process control across 3,000 automation points.
Integrated Research and Development
The facility houses state-of-the-art analytical laboratories and process sciences laboratories that mirror the production spaces exactly. This alignment is designed to facilitate smoother and faster transfer of processes from research and development to actual manufacturing. All phases of research can be carried out at the site, providing UCB (搜索) with complete end-to-end control over its gene therapy (搜索) pipeline.
"This is an important step in our innovation journey," declared Gaël Debauve, head of Gene Therapy (搜索) Analytical Sciences at UCB (搜索). "It should help us translate groundbreaking research into concrete solutions for patients."
Gene Therapy Technology Focus
Gene therapy (搜索) represents a fundamental shift in treating complex and devastating diseases by addressing their genetic roots. The technique involves modifying or replacing defective genes to tackle diseases at their source.
"The technique is based on the use of a virus that is rendered harmless as a messenger, which conveys to the cells instructions to function correctly," explained Debauve. "For the patient, this means a single administration rather than chronic treatment, and a more precise, tailored impact on each disease, with a long-lasting effect."
Sustainability and Future Expansion
UCB (搜索) is targeting BREEAM "Excellent" certification for the facility, which could make it one of the first pharmaceutical production facilities in the European Union to achieve such high sustainability standards. The facility design incorporates thoughtful sustainability goals from the outset.
The company has planned for future growth with 2,200 square meters reserved for possible manufacturing expansion and an additional 2,000 square meters for building expansion. The construction involved more than 400 team members working together on-site at its peak.
Strategic Campus Integration
The new gene therapy (搜索) facility is located at UCB (搜索)'s Braine-l'Alleud campus, which has operated since 1971 and covers more than 50 hectares. The campus houses one of the group's most important research centers, specializing in neurology and immunology, and employs around 3,000 people. UCB plans to conduct around fifteen gene therapy production campaigns per year at the new facility, with products intended for clinical trials and potential future commercialization.
