UHealth — the University of Miami Health System — has achieved its strongest performance to date in the 2026-2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings, earning national recognition in five adult specialties and high-performing designations across 17 procedures and conditions. The results, released Tuesday, August 4, 2026, reflect what leadership describes as years of sustained investment in quality, research, and patient care infrastructure.
The rankings evaluated 4,494 hospitals nationwide. This year also marked the first time U.S. News recognized statewide specialty rankings in three categories: Cancer, Cardiology & Heart Surgery, and Orthopedics. Regionally, UHealth ranked No. 2 in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area and No. 5 in Florida.
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute: A Quarter Century at No. 1
For the 25th consecutive year, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (搜索) claimed the No. 1 position in ophthalmology nationally. The streak represents one of the longest-running periods of sustained excellence in American medicine. Bascom Palmer's multidisciplinary research program spans basic science, clinical innovation, and partnerships that continue to shape the future of ophthalmology, reflecting what UHealth characterizes as a quarter century of leadership in vision care, scientific innovation, and education.
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center: A Dramatic Climb
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (搜索) achieved its most significant advance in the rankings, climbing to No. 23 nationally in cancer care — a substantial jump from its No. 45 ranking the previous year. Sylvester also earned distinction as the No. 1 cancer program in Florida.
As the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in South Florida, Sylvester unites scientific findings, clinical research, and patient care under one organizational framework. Its academic Phase 1 Clinical Trials Program, described as the only one of its kind in South Florida, provides patients access to new therapies at the earliest stages of development — potentially up to a decade before they become widely available as standard treatment.
The opening of the 12-story Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building in 2025 doubled Sylvester's research space and brought researchers, clinicians, and data experts together with the goal of accelerating translational research and improving patient outcomes.
Neurology & Neurosurgery and Cardiology Reach New Milestones
The Neurology & Neurosurgery department entered the Top 15 for the first time, ranking No. 14 nationally — a significant rise from No. 23 last year. The program has now been ranked in the Top 25 for six consecutive years. The division includes more than 70 renowned research and clinical faculty covering most neurological sub-specialties. Together with UHealth's expert neurosurgeons and large case volume, physicians are versed in neurocritical care. UHealth also houses one of the only neuropsychology programs in South Florida.
Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery entered the Top 50 nationally for the first time, marking another milestone in the health system's trajectory.
Geriatrics was also recognized in the Top 20 nationally.
High-Performing Specialties and Institutional Context
Five additional specialties earned high-performing marks, placing them among the top 10% of highest-performing hospitals nationwide: Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology & Lung Surgery, and Urology.
Dr. Dipen J. Parekh, who assumed the role of CEO of UHealth one year ago after serving as founding director of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute, framed the results as the product of long-term institutional discipline. "Our physicians, nurses and staff deserve every bit of this recognition, and we will celebrate it today knowing that our work is not done," said Dr. Parekh. "What is being recognized is a standard of excellence we set long before anyone outside was measuring it. That is what we hold ourselves to, and it is what we will continue to build on."
Tanira Ferreira, M.D., chief medical officer of University of Miami Hospital and Clinics and Miller School associate professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, added: "These results are really years in the making, with an intense focus on consistently delivering high-quality care. It demonstrates that we're thriving and continuing to grow."
The University of Miami is a member of the Association of American Universities, a group of 71 leading research universities — a distinction placing UM among only 3% of four-year universities in the United States. UHealth has also earned Magnet With Distinction recognition for nursing excellence, further underscoring the institutional emphasis on quality across disciplines.
