This global first-patient-in achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of the partnership between the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR (搜索)) and the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (搜索) (ABPI (搜索)), which funds the CRDCs to accelerate commercial study setup and delivery across the UK.

Streamlined Operational Excellence
The Newcastle CRDC achieved this milestone through innovative methods now being rolled out UK-wide via the NIHR (搜索) Industry Hub, which embeds a single national operating model for faster feasibility, setup and recruitment. Key strategies included:
- Conducting contracting and site-readiness processes in parallel with Health Research Authority (HRA) approvals
- Securing a signed contract within two weeks of HRA approval
- Rapid technical troubleshooting with the sponsor, including fast resolution of a spirometry calibration issue
- Close coordination between respiratory clinicians and CRDC delivery teams to line up eligible participants immediately upon green light to recruit
National Infrastructure Investment
In December 2024, a £71.8 million investment over seven years was awarded jointly from the NIHR (搜索) and the Voluntary Scheme for Branded Medicine Pricing, Access, and Growth (VPAG) Investment Programme to establish 20 CRDCs across the UK. Commencing in April, these new centres are designed to enhance the speed and efficiency of commercial clinical research delivery.
The CRDCs will work with industry and other research delivery infrastructure to support the UK's status as one of the best places in the world for innovative companies to conduct research by building further capacity in commercial contract research, providing dedicated staff and facilities, and making participation in research more accessible by supporting the decentralization of clinical trials to smaller district general hospitals and primary care settings.
