The Parkinson's Disease (搜索) Translational Research Collaboration (PD-TRC), supported by four major charities, represents the eighth Translational Research Collaboration established by the NIHR and the first to be hosted by the NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (搜索). The initiative brings together expertise and infrastructure through 17 centers of excellence across academia and the NHS to strengthen collaboration in groundbreaking translational Parkinson's disease research.
Addressing Critical Research Gaps
The collaboration addresses longstanding barriers that have slowed progress in Parkinson's research, including major gaps in experimental medicine and early clinical trials, as well as fragmented work across basic science, experimental medicine, and clinical research. Despite advances in basic science, these challenges have hindered the translation of promising discoveries into patient benefits.
"Parkinson's Disease (搜索) can be devastating for those that live with it, and despite progress in treatment and detection we still haven't found treatment to slow down the disease and address every patient's needs," said Professor Oliver Bandmann, Honorary Consultant Neurologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Professor of Movement Disorders at the University of Sheffield, who leads the collaboration.
Leadership and Structure
Professor Bandmann is supported by Professor Camille Carroll from the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (搜索) and Professor Alistair Noyce from Queen Mary University of London, both internationally recognized leaders in Parkinson's research. The collaboration is designed to foster coordination between basic science, experimental medicine, and clinical research disciplines.
Professor Christopher McDermott, Director of NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (搜索) and Professor of Translational Neurology at the University of Sheffield, emphasized the initiative's potential impact: "This is a fantastic opportunity to bring together expertise in Parkinson's disease (搜索) and associated neurological conditions from across the NHS, academia, patients, industry, and charity organisations to maximise the benefits of groundbreaking research taking place in Biomedical Research Centres across the country."
