The donation from philanthropist Kathy Coleman will fund the expansion of the existing Kathy and Les Coleman Clinical Trials Center into a dedicated 16,000-square-foot facility on the main campus.
Expanding Access to Experimental Cancer Treatments
The expanded center will significantly increase patient access to cutting-edge cancer (搜索) therapies. Currently offering more than 400 clinical trials annually, the facility serves thousands of patients seeking potentially life-extending treatments. With the new infrastructure, UH aims to dramatically scale this capacity within the next five years.
"UH Seidman Cancer Center (搜索) ushered in a new era of cancer (搜索) care at UH when it opened in 2011, and the Kathy and Les Coleman Clinical Trials Center has been integral to that," said Dr. Theodoros Teknos, president and scientific director of the UH Seidman Cancer Center. "Currently, we offer more than 400 clinical trials annually. With Kathy's support, we will triple our capacity by 2030, bringing potentially life-extending treatments to more patients than ever."
Enhanced Research Capabilities
The renovated facility will house new machinery to support diagnostic-based trials, a specialized type of clinical research that evaluates the reliability of diagnostic tests and procedures. This expansion will also enable UH to centralize its clinical trial services and build a dedicated phase 1 clinical trials program specifically focused on advancing new immunotherapies (搜索).
UH Seidman Cancer Center (搜索) holds a unique position in the national cancer (搜索) research landscape as one of only seven cancer centers nationwide with direct access to experimental cancer drugs through the National Cancer Institute pipeline. Additionally, the center is among just 11 academic centers across the country with the capability to manufacture CAR-T (搜索) cells on-site.
Philanthropic Legacy in Cancer Care
Kathy Coleman's latest contribution brings her total donations to University Hospitals (搜索) to more than $14 million, all given in memory of her late husband, Lester Coleman Jr. The former chairman and chief executive of Lubrizol Corp (搜索). died in 2000, just four months after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer (搜索).
"Clinical trials are critical for so many reasons," said Kathy Coleman, who serves as an active member of the UH Seidman Cancer Center (搜索) Leadership Council. "On a global level, they help advance research and move us closer to cures; but for individuals and families, I know personally the hope they bring."
Coleman has been recognized with UH's highest honor, the Samuel L. Mather Visionary Award, and previously served as co-chair of the hospital's Five Star Sensation philanthropic event. Her sustained commitment to cancer (搜索) research reflects both her personal experience with the disease and her dedication to advancing treatment options for future patients.
