University of Limerick to Lead €60 Million Rinn Pharma & Biopharma Research Centre for Next-Generation Medicines

University of Limerick (UL) has been named the coordinating institution for Rinn Pharma & Biopharma, a new €60 million national research centre dedicated to advancing the next generation of medicines. The centre brings together 73 leading researchers and 171 PhD candidates from 12 partner institutions across Ireland, creating a collaborative network designed to address critical challenges in drug development and manufacturing.
The announcement forms part of a broader €460 million government investment establishing seven new 'Rinn' Research Ireland (搜索) centres, spanning advanced therapies, artificial intelligence, energy, medical devices, pharma and biopharma, quantum technologies, and semiconductors. The Rinn network will support 577 research positions, develop over 800 PhDs, and involve 17 research-performing organisations in what has been described as a coordinated national effort of unprecedented scale.
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, said: "The scale and scope of this €460 million investment is a powerful statement of Ireland's ambition in research and innovation. Research Ireland (搜索) centres have, over the last 13 years, fundamentally reshaped our innovation landscape – turning excellent and innovative research into real-world societal and economic impact."
Building on a Proven Legacy
Rinn Pharma & Biopharma builds on the foundation of its predecessor, SSPC, the Research Ireland (搜索) Centre for Pharmaceuticals, which has delivered €1.3 billion in economic impact since its establishment in 2008 and generated a five-fold return for every euro invested. The new centre, situated in the Bernal Institute at UL, will work alongside partner institutions including University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, NIBRT, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin City University, Maynooth University, South East Technological University, University of Galway, Munster Technological University, and Tyndall National Institute.
UL Vice President Research and Innovation Professor Kevin Ryan commented: "This investment by the government and Research Ireland (搜索) is a huge endorsement of the excellent research led by UL in pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals and the strong legacy of the globally leading work carried out in SSPC."
A Dual-Focus Research Agenda
The centre proposes a transdisciplinary research programme targeting two core challenges in drug development. The first is the creation of patient-centred medicines that meet the needs of diverse patient groups, including the development and manufacture of advanced formulations that improve drug effectiveness, acceptability, and dosing. The second is the integration of sustainability into all stages of drug development and manufacturing, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of pharmaceutical processes across synthesis, bioprocessing, and formulation.
Professor Damien Thompson, Director of the new centre, stated: "Rinn Pharma & Biopharma represents a step-change in how we approach pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical research. European Integration Through NordicPharmaTrain (搜索)
In a further development, Rinn Pharma & Biopharma has been accepted into the NordicPharmaTrain (搜索) (NPT) network, a European research and training network connecting academic and industry partners to advance pharmaceutical innovation. The partnership will enable Rinn Pharma & Biopharma to host visiting researchers and PhD students, providing access to state-of-the-art laboratories, infrastructure, and training opportunities.
Professor Damien Thompson said of the partnership: "By joining NordicPharmaTrain (搜索), we are accelerating Ireland's role in delivering innovative pharmaceutical solutions. This partnership enables us to collaborate internationally on advanced manufacturing, formulation, and digital technologies, areas that are critical to the competitiveness and sustainability of Ireland's life sciences sector."
Dr Sarah Hayes, COO of Rinn Pharma & Biopharma, noted: "This partnership is mutually beneficial, providing access to a dynamic collaborative ecosystem with expanded opportunities for joint research, shared expertise and participation in European funding initiatives."
Industry Collaboration and Economic Impact
The seven Rinn centres have secured commitments for an additional €500 million to be leveraged from industry and other sources, with support from over 200 industry partners comprising more than 100 multinational corporations and almost 100 SMEs. Dr Diarmuid O'Brien, CEO of Research Ireland (搜索), remarked: "The Rinn network is about excellent multidisciplinary research, radical collaboration and deep connectivity at scale across 17 research performing institutions, industry, Government, public sector bodies, and the broader higher education and research system."
In a related development, Rinn Pharma & Biopharma and Cork-based biotech spin-out ArrayPatch (搜索) have announced a collaboration focused on developing a novel skin cancer (搜索) treatment using a patented dissolvable microneedle platform, aiming to improve treatment effectiveness and minimise side effects through precision drug delivery.
