UroMems Achieves Breakthrough with First Smart Artificial Urinary Sphincter Implant in Female Patient

Initial clinical results show the first patient achieved restored social continence and remained revision-free at six months post-activation.
UroMems (搜索) has achieved a significant medical breakthrough by successfully completing the first-ever implant of its UroActive (搜索) smart artificial urinary sphincter in a female patient, marking a potential paradigm shift in treating stress urinary incontinence (搜索) (SUI). The robotic-assisted procedure was performed at La Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital (搜索) in Paris by Professor Emmanuel Chartier-Kastler, Dr. Aurélien Beaugerie, and Dr. Christophe Vaessen.
Revolutionary Technology Platform
The UroActive (搜索) device represents the first smart active implant designed to treat SUI, powered by a MyoElectroMechanical System (MEMS). This innovative system is placed around the urethral duct and automatically adjusts based on the patient's activity level, providing personalized treatment that adapts to individual needs. The technology platform is protected by more than 120 patents and utilizes embedded smart, digital, and robotic systems to create patient-specific treatment algorithms.
"It's magic," stated the first female patient to activate the device. "I am so glad I can again do simple things in my daily life I was not able to do any more." Following the procedure, she later described the treatment as "a life saver" and declared "I am living again!"
Clinical Study Results
The SOPHIA clinical study's primary outcome measures include successful device activation and the rate of explants and revisions at six months. The first patient not only met these primary endpoints by remaining revision-free but also achieved restored social continence. Secondary measures, including leak rate values, have shown extremely positive results at the six-month follow-up.
"With the encouraging six-month post-activation results of our first study subject, we look forward to reviewing the balance of the follow-up data on our patients and advancing to the pivotal study stage of a potentially revolutionary SUI therapy," said Professor Pierre Mozer, UroMems (搜索) chief medical officer and co-founder.
Addressing Unmet Medical Need
Stress urinary incontinence (搜索) affects an estimated 40 million Americans and 90 million Europeans, occurring when bladder pressure exceeds that of the urethral sphincter (搜索) muscle during activities involving high intra-abdominal pressure, such as coughing, laughing, and exercising. The condition significantly impacts quality of life and can lead to depression, low self-esteem, and social stigma.
"It's unacceptable that women today don't have a better option for treating their stress incontinence," said Professor Mozer. "Ultimately, we hope UroActive (搜索) will become the therapy of choice for both physicians and their patients."
Current treatment options for moderate and severe SUI have historically been limited to mesh slings or manually-operated artificial urinary sphincters, while mild cases are typically addressed through pelvic floor re-education and bulking agents.
Regulatory Progress and Future Plans
UroMems (搜索) has received the Safer Technologies Program (STeP) designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (搜索) for UroActive (搜索). This collaborative program is designed to reduce development time and expedite marketing authorization for eligible devices. The first-in-human male UroActive implant was announced in November 2022.
"This is a unique accomplishment for UroMems (搜索) and SUI in women," said Hamid Lamraoui, UroMems chief executive officer and co-founder. "We are addressing the observations by so many physicians that there is a vast unmet need for a better way to definitively treat this female population."
The results from this clinical study will inform the design and implementation of UroMems (搜索)' pivotal clinical trial planned for Europe and the United States. The company, founded in 2011, has raised 46 million euros across two financing rounds and has received multiple innovation awards, including the Prix Galien Award Medstart'up and the Worldwide Innovation Challenge from the French government.
UroActive (搜索) has not yet received marketing authorization from the FDA and is not available for sale in the United States or European Union.
