A first-of-its-kind technology combination
Dr. Zachary Morris, professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (搜索) and radiation oncologist at the UW Health Carbone Cancer Center (搜索), emphasized that the program brings together technologies that have not previously been combined for patient care.
"This is the first time this specific set of highly advanced technologies has been combined and used for patients," Morris said. "Eligible patients will have the opportunity to receive treatment through a clinical trial during the initial launch of our proton therapy program."
Morris characterized the launch as a milestone built on extensive planning and collaboration. "We are so excited to see this day arrive and to be able to offer proton therapy for the patients who need it," he said. "This achievement is a culmination of tremendous planning and teamwork that has enabled us to bring forward one of the most precise forms of cancer (搜索) therapy and a proton therapy center that is among the most technologically advanced anywhere."
Which patients stand to benefit
Durkee clarified that proton therapy is not intended to replace traditional radiation but rather serves as an additional option for select patients. "Most of our patients will continue to receive x-ray therapy and that's actually the best treatment for most patients, but proton therapy is a really cool tool to have in your toolbox," he said. "It's an addition to a compliment of things that we use to treat cancer (搜索) — so sometimes we'll use x-ray based therapy, sometimes we'll use MRI-guided radiation, sometimes we'll use needles and seeds like brachytherapy."
The treatment is particularly beneficial for specific patient populations. Those who have previously received radiation, younger adults, and individuals with tumors located near sensitive anatomical structures such as the eyes, brainstem, or spine are among those who may gain the most from proton therapy.
"A specialized treatment — say for example where they're getting radiation twice, or maybe three times, or very young children or young adults, say someone that's 25 years old or 30 years old — proton therapy is a really nice tool to have. And the reason it's important for those patients, those populations, is because the side effects of radiation therapy can be additive," Durkee explained.
Care teams at UW Health will work with each patient to determine whether proton therapy represents the right treatment option, as not every patient will benefit from the approach.
A growing technology with future expansion plans
Durkee noted that proton therapy has expanded significantly in recent years. "This is really next generation technology. It's been around for decades but only more recently becoming increasingly ubiquitous — and by that I mean there are 48 centers in the U.S., which is actually quite a lot more than we had just a decade ago," he said.
The program currently serves adults through a clinical trial, with UW Health indicating plans to expand access to more patients in the future. Additionally, the institution intends to offer treatment in both a lying flat and an upright seated position — an option not yet available to patients that may benefit those with health conditions that make lying flat during treatment difficult. The proton therapy services are being offered at UW Health's Eastpark Medical Center.
