VCU Massey Becomes First Virginia Center to Offer FDA-Approved TIL Therapy for Advanced Melanoma
核心洞察
VCU Health (搜索)'s Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center (搜索) has become the first facility in Virginia to offer tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (搜索) (TIL) therapy for advanced stage melanoma (搜索) patients.
TIL therapy (搜索) represents the first FDA-approved cellular therapy for solid tumors, targeting approximately 40% of aggressive melanoma (搜索) patients who do not respond to current treatment options.
The highly personalized treatment extracts immune cells from patient tumors, amplifies them by billions at an external facility, and returns them via one-time infusion.
VCU Health (搜索)'s Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center (搜索) has achieved a significant milestone in cancer treatment by becoming the first facility in Virginia to offer tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (搜索) (TIL) therapy for patients with advanced stage melanoma (搜索). This breakthrough represents the first FDA-approved cellular therapy for solid tumors, offering new hope for patients who have exhausted conventional treatment options.
Revolutionary Cellular Therapy Approach
TIL therapy (搜索), also known as adoptive cell therapy, Amtagvi, or lifileucel, represents a highly personalized treatment approach that harnesses the patient's own immune system to fight cancer. The therapy targets approximately 40% of patients with aggressive melanoma (搜索) who do not respond to current standard treatment options.
The treatment process involves removing a sample of the patient's tumor and sending it to a specialized facility where tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (搜索) cells are extracted and "amplified and rejuvenated by the billions." These enhanced immune cells are then returned to Massey and administered to the patient through a one-time infusion.
"This innovative new approach offers the potential of long-term survival for a large percentage of advanced melanoma (搜索) patients who have exhausted all other available options," said Andrew Poklepovic, M.D., a medical oncologist and associate director for clinical research at Massey, who specializes in the treatment of melanoma.
Addressing Critical Medical Need
Melanoma (搜索) represents a particularly challenging form of skin cancer (搜索) due to its ability to grow rapidly and spread to other organs. While most deaths from skin cancer are attributed to melanoma, current statistics reveal that "just over half of melanoma patients with metastatic disease experience long-term survival with the current standard-of-care medical treatment options."
This treatment gap underscores the significance of TIL therapy (搜索)'s approval for the substantial patient population that does not benefit from existing therapeutic approaches.
Clinical Excellence and Future Expansion
Massey's ability to offer this cutting-edge therapy stems from its physicians' participation in initial clinical trials beginning in 2017, culminating in official FDA approval in February 2024. The center's status as the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Virginia positioned it to become the sole authorized treatment facility in the commonwealth.
"We have recruited and trained a high-performing clinical team that operates like the Avengers against late-stage melanoma (搜索)," said John McCarty, MD, medical director of Massey's Cellular Immunotherapies and Transplant Program. "We're moving into a completely new era of cellular therapy."
Beyond current melanoma (搜索) applications, Massey is actively conducting clinical trials to investigate TIL therapy (搜索)'s potential for lung cancer (搜索) treatment and earlier stages of melanoma, suggesting broader therapeutic applications may emerge in the future.
