VHIO Renews Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence Accreditation with Near-Perfect Score

The Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (搜索) (VHIO) renewed its Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence accreditation, Spain's highest research distinction, achieving a score of 99.4 out of 100.

The reaccreditation recognizes VHIO's strength in early-phase clinical trials, targeted therapies, and its 2026–2029 Strategic Plan focused on P4 Cancer (搜索) Medicine, artificial intelligence, and advanced therapies.
The Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (搜索) (VHIO) has renewed its accreditation as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence, the highest distinction awarded by Spain's Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities to scientific research centres. The reaccreditation, which provides renewed momentum for the institute, recognises the excellence, impact and transformative potential of VHIO's research in translational oncology and precision medicine.
In 2021, VHIO became the first research institute affiliated with a healthcare institution in Spain to receive this distinction. Four years later, the renewal confirms the strength of the institute's scientific model and its ability to continue leading advances in cancer (搜索) research at both the European and international levels.
Outstanding Score Confirms Scientific, Clinical and Strategic Excellence
In its evaluation report, the Ministry's panel unanimously highlighted VHIO's international leadership in translational oncology and precision medicine, as well as the clinical and societal impact of its activities. As part of the reaccreditation process, VHIO achieved a score of 99.4 out of 100, further consolidating its position as one of Europe's leading cancer (搜索) research centres.
Among the aspects most highly valued by the evaluation panel were VHIO's scientific and clinical excellence and its ability to translate scientific innovation into clinical practice; the institute's international leadership and its active role in key European strategic networks; the impact of its clinical trials and precision medicine programmes; the strength and ambition of its 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, focused on P4 Cancer (搜索) Medicine (predictive, preventive, personalised and participatory), artificial intelligence and advanced therapies; and its capacity for innovation and value creation, including the establishment of spin-offs, patent development and the advancement of novel therapeutic approaches.
Since first receiving the accreditation in 2021, VHIO has strengthened its position as a global leader in cancer (搜索) research by driving innovative projects, attracting international talent and expanding its leadership in clinical trials, particularly in early-phase studies and the development of targeted therapies and precision medicine strategies.
"The renewal of the Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence accreditation is a recognition of the work, commitment and excellence of all VHIO professionals. This achievement has been made possible through the collaboration of scientific, clinical, technological and management teams working together to transform research into tangible benefits for patients," said Dr Josep Tabernero, Director of the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (搜索) and Head of the Medical Oncology Department at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital.
New Opportunities in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science
This recognition also opens the door to new opportunities to address major future challenges in biomedical research. These include advancing the application of artificial intelligence in oncology, fostering the sharing and integrated analysis of clinical and genomic data, and developing new therapeutic strategies aimed at improving survival and quality of life for people with cancer (搜索).
"Renewing the Severo Ochoa accreditation confirms the scientific and institutional maturity achieved by VHIO in recent years," said Dr Alejandro Piris, Director of VHIO's Scientific Management Area.
