BioNTech has completed the installation of two BioNTainer units at its Bundoora facility in Melbourne, a milestone that cements Victoria's status as one of only two locations worldwide to host the modular mRNA manufacturing technology. The units, first prototyped in Germany, are designed as portable laboratories capable of producing investigational vaccines and treatments at small scale for research and development purposes.
Minister for Economic Growth and Jobs Steve Dimopoulos visited the site this week to mark the installation, which the Victorian Government projects will support up to 1,200 jobs across the broader biotechnology industry over the next 10 years.
"Victoria is making the vaccines of the future supporting thousands of jobs right here in Melbourne," Dimopoulos said. "Every dollar invested in medical research attracts business and drives economic growth."
A Growing mRNA Ecosystem
Victoria is already home to two of the world's leading mRNA vaccine developers — BioNTech and Moderna — and the new BioNTainer units further consolidate the state's position within the global life sciences landscape. The facility is situated within La Trobe University's $5 billion University City precinct at Bundoora and forms a cornerstone of BioNTech's partnership with the Allan Labor Government.
The two units have been named Wirrarap, meaning medicine man, faith and spirit healer, and Boordup, meaning a source or place of comfort, in the Woi wurrung language.
Researchers and biotechnology companies will be able to work directly with BioNTech to develop investigational new medicines spanning cancer treatments to vaccines targeting emerging diseases. The modular nature of the BioNTainer units allows for flexible, small-scale manufacturing focused specifically on research and development.
Accelerating Discovery to Treatment
Deputy Premier and Minister for Medical Research Ben Carroll emphasized the translational potential of the new infrastructure. "These facilities don't just support research — they accelerate the journey from scientific discovery to life-saving treatments," Carroll said.
BioNTech Chief Operating Officer Dr Sierk Poetting described the strategic intent behind the Melbourne installation. "Our BioNTainer units in Melbourne are aimed at supporting the local mRNA ecosystem by providing small-scale manufacturing capabilities focused on research and development," Dr Poetting said. "They are intended to become a resource for local partners, helping to expand innovation, accelerate development, and strengthen regional capabilities."
La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell highlighted the collaborative framework underpinning the precinct. "The installation of the BioNTainer units marks another important step in the development of a world-class innovation ecosystem at La Trobe's University City," Professor Farrell said. "As a hub for next-generation health and biotechnology, our University City precinct brings together research and industry partners like BioNTech and government to create new opportunities for collaboration, discovery and impact, helping build the future of medical innovation in Victoria."
