The biotechnology company, founded by Atlas Venture (搜索) more than three years ago, is targeting a significant unmet medical need in movement disorders. Vima estimates that approximately 160,000 people in the United States have isolated dystonia (搜索), a chronic and disabling neurological condition characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that worsen with movement. Dystonia also manifests as a symptom in other brain diseases, including Parkinson's disease (搜索).
Addressing Treatment Gaps
Current treatment options for dystonia (搜索) and Parkinson's disease (搜索) include medications like levodopa, Botox injections, and other therapies that reduce muscle stiffness. However, these treatments can lose effectiveness over time or cause prohibitive side effects. Critically, patients with isolated dystonia have no FDA-approved oral treatment options available.
"Often the problem with [neurology] is uncertainty about the mechanism, risk for later-stage failure," said Bernard Ravina, Vima's CEO, in an interview with BioPharma Dive. "That's one of the reasons we really like this: clear need and match of the biology here with clinical validation."
Novel Mechanism of Action
VIM0423 (搜索) works by selectively targeting muscarinic cholinergic receptors (搜索), which regulate various neurological functions including motor control. While older drugs targeting these receptors exist, such as trihexyphenidyl—a component of VIM0423—they are associated with poor tolerability.
