The study, published in Nutrition and Cancer and funded by FAPESP, followed 80 women over age 45 undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy at the oncology outpatient clinic of Hospital das Clínicas (搜索) at FMB-UNESP (搜索) in São Paulo, Brazil. Participants were randomly divided into two equal groups, with one receiving 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily while the other received placebo tablets.
Significant Improvement in Treatment Outcomes
After six months of treatment, the results showed a marked difference between the groups. Among women taking vitamin D supplementation, 43% experienced complete disappearance of their cancer following chemotherapy, compared to only 24% in the placebo group.
"Even with a small sample of participants, it was possible to observe a significant difference in the response to chemotherapy," said Eduardo Carvalho-Pessoa, president of the São Paulo Regional Brazilian Society of Mastology (搜索) and one of the study's authors. "In addition, the dosage used in the research [2,000 IU per day] is far below the target dose for correcting vitamin D deficiency, which is usually 50,000 IU per week."
Baseline Deficiency and Treatment Response
At the study's onset, most participants had low vitamin D levels, defined as less than 20 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) of blood. The Brazilian Society of Rheumatology (搜索) recommends maintaining levels between 40 and 70 ng/mL for optimal health.
"With supplementation, levels increased throughout chemotherapy treatment, which reinforces a possible contribution to the patients' recovery," Carvalho-Pessoa told Agência FAPESP. He noted that vitamin D represents "an accessible and inexpensive option compared to other drugs used to improve the response to chemotherapy, some of which are not even included in the list of the Unified Health System (搜索)."

The findings contribute to growing evidence suggesting vitamin D may function as a "chemosensitizer" that enhances cancer treatment effectiveness. While the results are promising, researchers emphasize the need for larger studies to validate these findings. "These are encouraging results that justify a new round of studies with a larger number of participants," Carvalho-Pessoa concluded. "This will allow a greater understanding of the role of vitamin D in increasing the response to chemotherapy treatment and, consequently, in the greater likelihood of breast cancer remission."
The study's limitations include its small sample size of 80 participants, though the researchers note that even with this constraint, significant differences in treatment response were observable.
