Whole-Body MRI Scans Surge in Popularity Despite Warnings from Major Medical Organizations

Yet this growing trend is drawing sharp criticism from major medical organizations and physicians who warn that the scans may cause more harm than good for asymptomatic individuals.
Companies offering these services, such as Prenuvo (搜索), promote whole-body MRI as a tool that can "scan for stage one cancers as well as 500 other conditions," as one influencer described. Another social media message urged consumers: "You deserve to know what's going on in your body even before symptoms appear."
What the Companies Say
Prenuvo (搜索) Chief Medical Officer Dan Durand acknowledged that findings warranting additional evaluation are relatively common, with about one in five patients likely to receive a result that requires follow-up screening. "It depends on the severity of what we find, and also how certain we are about what it is," Durand said.
Durand framed whole-body scanning as part of a growing movement in medicine, noting that Prenuvo (搜索)'s staff often identifies findings related to cardiovascular and orthopedic health in addition to cancer screening. "I think this should be an option for everybody," he said.
He also expressed a personal perspective on the value of knowing about potential health issues: "I will say, as an individual, even if there were no benefit in survival for me, I would want to know. I have enough people relying on me that if the difference is merely between me knowing about something and not knowing about it, I would want to know."
Medical Community Pushes Back
Despite the marketing appeal, no major medical groups — including the American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology (搜索) — recommend whole-body scans for people without specific indicators, such as a high risk of certain cancers. The American College of Radiology has stated there is not "sufficient evidence to justify recommending total body screening for patients with no clinical symptoms, risk factors or a family history suggesting underlying disease or serious injury."
Radiologist Dr. Robert Krasny of RadNet in Santa Monica identified the discovery of harmless abnormalities as a primary concern. "The classic downside is finding something that ultimately turns out to be nothing," Krasny said.
He pointed to prostate cancer as an illustrative example: "There are a number of prostate cancers that shouldn't be treated and if you backtrack a little bit from shouldn't be treated they probably shouldn't be found because they're causing more anxiety and more difficulty."
The Ovarian Cancer Screening Evidence
Krasny cited an editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association discussing a study on ovarian cancer screening. According to the editorial, 212 women in an elective screening group were diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but mortality outcomes were the same when compared with patients who were not screened. The authors also reported that more than 1,000 women who were screened underwent unnecessary surgery.
"They may not have been symptomatic yet, but they weren't found in any different stage than they might have been found if they were symptomatic or found later," Krasny explained.
The Harms of Incidental Findings
Cardiologist Jason Ryan, creator of the Boards and Beyond educational platform, outlined the possible outcomes of whole-body imaging. While it is possible that "whole body imaging can identify abnormal or diseased tissue that can be eliminated by early detection, which is the ideal screening result," he noted that more often such testing reveals "normal tissue that appears abnormal," "abnormal tissue that's harmless and best left alone," or "abnormal tissue that is untreatable and lethal no matter what we do."
Ryan argued that when screening healthy asymptomatic people who are not at high risk, the chance of achieving that ideal screening result is very low, while there is a far greater chance for findings that lead to invasive follow-up tests yielding more harm than benefit. This, he noted, can also overburden clinics and hospitals.
One of the biggest concerns is that someone with an incidental finding may then undergo follow-up computed tomography scans involving ionizing radiation and face biopsy complications while searching for something that never would have caused symptoms.
Cost and Practical Considerations
The cost of elective whole-body MRI scans typically ranges from $1,500 to $4,000, and such scans are rarely covered by health insurance. For ultrasound-based full-body scans, costs generally fall between $1,000 and $3,500.
Venk Murthy, a physician and faculty member at the University of Michigan Medical School, noted additional limitations of ultrasound scans, writing that there are things ultrasound cannot pick up well due to shadows from bones or air and movement in the digestive tract interfering with clear images.
Experts also emphasize that MRIs of any kind are usually not the starting point of a routine diagnostic work-up. Instead, after a patient provides a medical history and undergoes a physical exam, MRIs are deployed to confirm or rule out diseases as part of a proper differential diagnosis.
Guidance for Patients
Physicians encourage patients to have thorough conversations with their primary care providers before pursuing elective screening. "Just because something like this is offered doesn't necessarily mean that it's the right test for you and doesn't mean that it will give you the comfort that you think you want," Krasny said.
"This is where a good conversation with your primary referring physician is warranted," he added, urging patients to discuss any concerns about their personal, family, or occupational history before seeking elective whole-body screening.
Ultimately, as with any diagnostic test, whole-body scans should provide a net benefit before being used on asymptomatic people. Screening, experts caution, ought not to turn mainly healthy people — sometimes called the "worried well" — into patients.
