Wu Yifang Appointed Chairman of Everest Medicines as Company Advances mRNA Cancer Vaccine Platform
核心洞察
Wu Yifang, former chairman and CEO of Fosun Pharma with over 30 years of pharmaceutical experience, has been appointed Chairman of the Board at Everest Medicines (搜索).
The appointment comes as Everest advances its AI + mRNA development platform targeting oncology and autoimmune diseases, with its personalized cancer (搜索) vaccine EVM16 entering patient trials.
Everest reported strong revenue growth of 48% to RMB 446 million in the first half of 2025, driven by expansion of flagship products Nefecon (搜索) and Yika (搜索).
Wu Yifang, the former chairman and CEO of Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical, has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors at Everest Medicines (搜索), marking a significant leadership transition as the innovative drugmaker advances its personalized cancer (搜索) vaccine platform and prepares for profitability.
The appointment was announced through Everest's official channels, with Wu concurrently serving as Chairman of the Nomination Committee and member of the Remuneration Committee. Former Chairman Fu Wei has been reassigned as a non-executive director and appointed Honorary Chairman of the Board, while CEO Luo Yongqing continues to oversee daily operations and business management.
Leadership Transition and Strategic Focus
Wu brings over 30 years of pharmaceutical industry experience to Everest, having joined Fosun Pharma in 2004 where he held senior positions including Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Executive Officer. During his tenure at Fosun Pharma, he successfully promoted the company's global expansion and innovation-driven transformation, particularly in introducing German biotech firm BioNTech's mRNA technology to the China market.
The 56-year-old executive's expertise in mRNA technology aligns with Everest's strategic focus. The company has built a localized AI + mRNA development platform targeting oncology and autoimmune diseases. Everest's personalized mRNA therapeutic cancer (搜索) vaccine EVM16 was used on its first patient in March in an Investigator-Initiated Trial at the Beijing Cancer Hospital.
Wu's appointment comes just one day after he was named executive operating partner of CBC Group (搜索), Everest's parent company. CBC Group has led multiple rounds of financing for Everest and maintained over 25% ownership even after IPO-related reductions, continuing as the controlling shareholder.
Financial Performance and Growth Trajectory
Everest Medicines (搜索) reported strong financial performance in its interim results for the six months ended June 30, 2025. The company achieved revenue of RMB 446 million, representing approximately 48.0% growth compared to RMB 302 million for the same period in 2024. The revenue growth was primarily driven by sustained market expansion of Nefecon (搜索) and Yika (搜索) in commercially launched markets.
However, gross margin decreased from 76.6% to 67.1%, mainly due to price adjustments for Nefecon (搜索) under China's National Reimbursement Drug List (NRDL) and optimized product costs. Despite remaining in a loss-making phase, net losses decreased significantly from RMB 632 million to RMB 250 million during the reporting period.
Flagship Product Performance and Market Outlook
Nefecon (搜索), currently the only IgA nephropathy (搜索) causative treatment approved in China, the United States, and Europe, represents one of Everest's flagship products. The drug was included in China's National Reimbursement Drug List in January 2025 and received full approval in May, removing restrictions related to proteinuria levels.
Sales of Nefecon (搜索) grew significantly in the first half of the year, with projected annual sales expected to reach RMB 1.2 billion to RMB 1.4 billion. Market penetration of Yika (搜索) in core hospitals also continued to improve, with total annual revenue anticipated to reach RMB 1.6 billion to RMB 1.8 billion.
Competitive Landscape Challenges
The IgA nephropathy (搜索) treatment market, previously considered a blue ocean, is experiencing increased competition. Two drugs developed by Novartis AG received approval in 2025: Atrasentan (Atrasentan Hydrochloride Tablets), approved on August 20 for reducing proteinuria in adult IgA nephropathy patients at risk of rapid disease progression, and Iptacopan (Iptacopan Hydrochloride Capsules), approved on September 10 as an oral complement factor B (搜索) inhibitor.
Additionally, Otsuka Pharmaceutical (搜索)'s Sparsentan submitted an application for market entry in September, while Rongchang Bio (搜索) announced that Telitacicept met the primary endpoint in its domestic Phase 3 clinical trial for IgA nephropathy (搜索) treatment.
Strategic Positioning for Profitability
With strong financial reserves and growing research and development as well as commercialization capabilities, Everest aims to achieve operating profit this year. The company faces challenges in the IgA nephropathy (搜索) market in China, including low diagnosis rates that require substantial educational efforts for physicians and patients to facilitate early diagnosis and standardized treatment.
Despite the positive leadership news, Everest's share price closed down 3.9 percent at HKD53.80 following the announcement, reflecting market uncertainty about the strategic implications of the leadership transition.
