Zai Lab Secures Reimbursement Renewal for Three Key Therapies in China's 2025 National Drug List
核心洞察
Zai Lab announced the successful renewal of VYVGART, NUZYRA, and ZEJULA in China's 2025 National Reimbursement Drug List, ensuring continued patient access to these innovative therapies.
The company now has six products included on the NRDL, significantly reducing disease burden by enabling broad patient access to high-quality medicines for serious conditions.
VYVGART treats generalized myasthenia gravis (搜索) affecting approximately 170,000 Chinese patients, while NUZYRA addresses bacterial infections with 10 million CABP cases annually.
Zai Lab Limited announced that three of its key therapeutic products have been successfully renewed in China's 2025 National Reimbursement Drug List (NRDL), ensuring continued patient access to innovative treatments for serious medical conditions. The renewals include VYVGART for generalized myasthenia gravis (搜索), NUZYRA for bacterial infections, and ZEJULA for ovarian cancer (搜索) maintenance therapy.
The National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) renewed VYVGART (efgartigimod alfa injection) for treating adult patients with generalized myasthenia gravis (搜索) who are anti-acetylcholine receptor (搜索) antibody positive, NUZYRA (omadacycline) oral formulation for community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (搜索) and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (搜索), and ZEJULA (niraparib) for maintenance treatment of platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer (搜索) patients.
"The successful renewal of VYVGART, NUZYRA and ZEJULA reflects the continued recognition of their strong clinical value," said Andrew Zhu, Chief Commercial Officer of Zai Lab in Greater China. "We are pleased to now have six products included on the NRDL, which reduces the disease burden on patients by enabling broad patient access to high-quality, novel medicines."
Addressing Critical Unmet Medical Needs
Myasthenia Gravis Treatment Breakthrough
VYVGART represents a significant advancement for Chinese patients with generalized myasthenia gravis (搜索), a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by debilitating and potentially life-threatening muscle weakness. Approximately 170,000 people in China live with generalized myasthenia gravis, with 85% having confirmed anti-acetylcholine receptor (搜索) antibodies.
The condition affects skeletal muscles throughout the body, resulting in weakness and early fatigue. Patients frequently experience difficulties with double vision, facial expression, speech, swallowing, and ambulation. In life-threatening cases, the disease can affect breathing muscles, which can be fatal.
VYVGART is an antibody fragment designed to reduce disease-causing immunoglobulin G antibodies and block the IgG recycling process. The drug binds to the neonatal Fc receptor, which plays a central role in rescuing IgG antibodies from degradation. The National Medical Products Administration approved VYVGART in June 2023, making it the first approved FcRn (搜索) blocker in China.
Combating Bacterial Infections
NUZYRA addresses significant unmet needs in treating bacterial infections in China. Community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (搜索) affects approximately 10 million patients annually in mainland China, while acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (搜索) affected an estimated 2.8 million patients in 2015.
The novel tetracycline-class antibacterial offers both oral and intravenous formulations and demonstrates activity across a broad spectrum of bacterial infections, including those caused by Gram-positive, Gram-negative, atypical, and many other pathogens. The NMPA approved NUZYRA as a Category 1 innovative drug for both formulations in treating these conditions.
Ovarian Cancer Maintenance Therapy
ZEJULA provides critical maintenance therapy for ovarian cancer (搜索) patients in China, where the disease represents one of the most common gynecologic cancers. The country sees over 55,000 newly diagnosed cases and 37,000 deaths annually from ovarian cancer.
The oral, once-daily poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP (搜索)) 1/2 inhibitor blocks cancer cells' ability to repair themselves after damage from radiation and certain chemotherapies. This inhibition of DNA damage repair can result in cancer cells' inability to replicate and programmed cell death. Tumors deficient in key DNA damage repair pathways, particularly BRCA1 mutant tumors, show particular sensitivity to ZEJULA.
Market Access and Patient Impact
The NRDL inclusion significantly enhances patient access to these innovative therapies by reducing financial barriers. Zai Lab's portfolio now includes six products on the national reimbursement list, reflecting the company's commitment to addressing unmet medical needs in oncology, immunology, neuroscience, and infectious disease.
The company holds exclusive licenses for these products in Greater China through partnerships with leading pharmaceutical companies. Zai Lab licensed efgartigimod from argenx, omadacycline from Paratek Pharmaceuticals (搜索) (acquired by Novo Holdings A/S), and niraparib from GlaxoSmithKline.
The renewals demonstrate the continued recognition of these therapies' clinical value by Chinese healthcare authorities and support Zai Lab's mission to enhance accessibility and affordability of innovative medicines for patients in need.
