Biotech startup Zumutor Biologics (搜索) has raised $7.3 million (approximately ₹70 crore) in a Series B funding round to complete its ongoing US FDA Phase 1 clinical study of ZM008, a first-in-class NK cell checkpoint (搜索) therapy for solid tumors (搜索). The round drew participation from existing investors Accel (搜索) and Bharat Innovation Fund (搜索), alongside new investors Premji Invest (搜索) and angel investors Ashish Kacholia and Raj Dandu.
The capital infusion will fund the completion of ZM008's Phase 1 trial both as a monotherapy and in combination regimens, as well as the initiation of Phase 1B expansion cohorts and global Phase 2 studies, including in India.
A First-in-Class NK Cell Checkpoint (搜索) Approach
Founded in 2013 by Kavitha Iyer Rodrigues, Zumutor develops immunotherapy drugs that activate the body's natural killer (NK) cells to attack tumors. ZM008 is derived from the company's fully human monoclonal antibody library and represents a first-of-its-kind achievement in India.
"Early clinical data from the ongoing Phase 1 study of ZM008 highlight the differentiated potential of novel NK checkpoint therapy for solid tumors (搜索). Building on these findings, we are expanding into dose expansion cohorts and combination studies across multiple tumor types," said Dr. Maloy Ghosh, Zumutor's chief scientific officer.
The company has dosed 24 patients to date, with no dose-limiting toxicities observed and no anti-drug antibody responses across multiple cycles, supporting the therapy's tolerability profile.
Translational Progress and Biomarker Strategy
Zumutor has made significant strides in its biomarker strategy. A recent peer-reviewed publication outlines potential biomarkers linked to target expression, immune activation pathways, and mechanism of action. Ongoing analysis of clinical samples — including immune cell activation and inhibitory signals, cytokine profiles, and tumor markers — is helping build a robust framework for mechanism validation and patient stratification.
The company's INABLR® platform, which integrates both phage display and yeast surface display technologies, enables comprehensive screening of druggable candidates and can discover novel therapeutic antibodies against specific targets within four to six months. Because the platform is built on a fully human monoclonal antibody library, antibodies contain no artificial sequences, reducing immunogenicity risk.
Combination Strategy and Pipeline Expansion
Zumutor is prioritizing combination immunotherapy strategies guided by the hypothesis that targeting complementary immune pathways can unlock clinical benefit in hard-to-treat "cold tumors" that respond poorly to current therapies. The company sees strong potential in combining adoptive T cell-mediated and innate NK cell-mediated checkpoint pathways to address limited responses observed with approved anti-PD-1 and anti-PD-L1 therapies.
A novel combination study of ZM008 with an anti-PD-1 antibody (搜索) is set to begin patient dosing shortly. Data from this trial will be critical in evaluating potential synergistic anti-tumor effects.
Beyond ZM008, Zumutor is building partnerships with pharma and biotech companies in India and the US across modalities including monoclonal antibodies, bispecific immune engagers, and antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs).
Funding Trajectory and Strategic Outlook
With this latest round, Zumutor has raised approximately $33 million to date. Prior rounds include a $6.2 million Series A4 led by Siana Capital (搜索) in 2021. The company is headquartered in the US with an R&D laboratory in Bengaluru.
Over the next 12 to 24 months, Zumutor's primary focus is advancing ZM008 into Phase 2 clinical trials across India and select global sites. The company has built a global IP portfolio of granted patents, positioning it for partnerships and licensing deals with leading pharma and biotech players.
The funding announcement comes amid growing government support for India's biotech sector, including the newly announced Biopharma SHAKTI scheme with an outlay of ₹10,000 crore, and India's bioeconomy projected to become a $300 billion market opportunity by 2030.
