- Researchers at Kindai University, RIKEN and collaborators found that roughly 5% of clear cell ovarian cancers display unusually high IL-17 activity, creating an inflammatory, immunotherapy-permissive microenvironment. - IL-17 acts directly on cancer cells, activating NF-κB to release chemokines that recruit functional antitumor immune cells, independent of microsatellite instability or high tumor mutational burden. - In mouse models, an IL-17-rich environment made anti-PD-L1 checkpoint therapy more effective and extended survival, suggesting IL-17 is a predictive rather than prognostic biomarker. - The findings, published in Molecular Cancer, point toward personalized selection of immunotherapy for a subtype long considered resistant to both chemotherapy and checkpoint blockade.
