- A Royal College of Physicians review of 20 brain cancer cases at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire found prolonged, non-standard temozolomide courses with little or no evidence of benefit. - Fifteen of the 20 reviewed cases were judged unsatisfactory overall, with no cases rated as representing good practice, according to leaked preliminary findings. - One patient received more than 100 cycles of temozolomide before doctors identified a different, less aggressive tumour, later developing acute myeloid leukaemia. - More than 40 patients are taking legal action against the trust over prolonged or unnecessary chemotherapy, including one woman treated for 11 years for a cancer she never had.
- Coventry-based Skyfarer has partnered with University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust to test drone delivery of radioactive medicines, potentially reducing transport time significantly. - The "Orca" drone can carry packages up to 15kg (33lbs) and is designed to safely transport time-sensitive radioactive tracers encased in lead between healthcare facilities. - The initiative aims to improve patient access to nuclear medicine diagnostics, especially in remote areas, while reducing travel costs and environmental impact through a smaller carbon footprint.
