BMI equal to or greater than 30 kg /m2,
stable body weight (<3 kg self-reported change during the previous 3 months)
Exclusion criteria for participation in the study (the presence of even one of the factors):
- being on a vegetarian or any another alternative diet,
- cancer disease (radiotherapy / chemotherapy)
- diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1DM; formerlyinsulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes)
- liver diseases, kidney disease, pancreas diseases, acute coronary artery disease
- transplantation or implantation surgery (bypass)
- myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke or hemorrhagic stroke
- phenylketonuria, galactosemia
- autoimmune diseases (autoimmune thyroid disease, celiac disease, haemolytic anemia, vitiligo, Addison's disease, hyperbilirubinemia)
- inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis)
- pregnancy
- mental disorders, eating disorders, ie. anorexia, bulimia
- antibiotics, steroids
- addiction to drugs, alcohol (consumption of more than 1 serving of alcohol per day)
