Inclusion Criteria

  • (1\) Biopsy proven adenocarcinoma of the rectum located \< 15 cm above the anal verge
  • (2\) Patients with primary rectal cancer, who are eligible for laparoscopic low anterior resection with curative excision
  • (3\) Clinical stage I\-III

Exclusion Criteria

  • (1\) Very low rectal cancer requiring intersphincteric resection or abdominoperineal resection
  • (2\) Proven arteriosclerosis of the IMA and its branches
  • (3\) Clinically suspected lymph node metastasis around the origin of the IMA from the aorta on preoperative imaging
  • (4\) Familial adenomatous polyposis
  • (5\) Inflammatory bowel disease
