•o Age from 18 to 65 years
•o moderate or severe depressive episode (according to Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, HDRS)
•o at least 2 unsuccessful antidepressant medication attempts in the history of the current episode

•o Incapacitated persons and persons in official or judicial custody.
•o Persons with consumptive diseases and/or in poor general condition
•o No sufficient hearing or reading ability
•o Contraindications for rTMS
•presence of ferromagnetic material (e.g. cochlear implants) in the brain
•Cardiac pacemaker
•o previous rTMS treatment
•o electroconvulsive therapy in the preceding 6 months
•o relevant structural lesions on MRI: this excludes expected age-related changes such as mild cerebral microangiopathy in patients over 50 years of age or changes without expected relevance such as small arachnoid cyst
•o Relevant comorbidities
•Current substance abuse or dependence
•Organic mental disorders
•Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder
•Neurological disorders, e.g., multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's syndrome (excluding headache disorders)
•Diseases that are associated with an inflammatory response and lead to permanently elevated inflammatory parameters
•Severe internal diseases associated with a significantly reduced general condition
