- Brief Summary
124 patients were assessed for eligibility after clinical and radiographic evaluation. 120 patients who were met with inclusion criteria were randomly divided into the test group (n=60) and the control group (n=60). Four patients of the control group were not appeared during the follow-up. A total of 116 patients (mean age: 54.98±10.81; 70 males and 46 females) were included in this study. The mean age of the test group (n=60; 38 males and 24 females) were 56.05 ± 11.02. The mean age of the control group (n=56; 32 males and 24 females) were 53.84 ± 10.55. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups with regard to sex. In the control group, twenties were two, thirties were three, forties were fourteen, fifties were twenty-three, sixties were nine and seventies were five. In the test group, twenties were two, thirties were two, forties were thirteen, fifties were fourteen, sixties were twenty-four and seventies were five. After scaling and root planing, there were no side effects and discomfort in both groups. In the present study, the modified plaque score, plaque index, O’Leary plaque control record, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level and gingival index were improved in both groups compared with those of baseline. There were no significant differences in gingival index, probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level between two groups (P > 0.05). However, the test group showed a significant improvement in MPS compared with the control group after root planing (P = 0.023). These findings suggest that the professional intraoral tooth brushing instruction with the modified plaque score provides effective treatment and prevention of periodontitis and peri-implantitis.
