1. Subcortical ischaemic stroke
2. Index stroke between two weeks and three months prior to randomisation

1. >70% extra-cranial internal carotid artery stenosis
2. Known coronary arterial disease
3. Significant co-morbidity
4. Contra-indication to or indication for administration of allopurinol
5. Contra-indication to administration of acetazolamide
6. Concurrent azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine therapy
7. Serum creatinine concentration greater than 250 micromoles per litre
