age of 30–70 years
- present diagnosis of severe chronic periodontitis of at least 6 teeth with a probing pocket depth (PPD) >5 mm, bleeding
- written informed consent
- Plaque Index (PI) < 1 and Gingiva Index (GI) <1 after pretreatment
- major systemic illnesses (i.e., diabetes mellitus, cancer, HIV, tuberculosis, bone metabolic diseases or disorders that compromise wound healing, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus)
- radiation, or immunosuppressive therapy
- pregnant or breastfeeding woman
- smoking behaviour
- use of long-term administration of anti-inflammatory medications
- antibiotic therapies in the previous 6 months
- teeth with furcation involvement
- radiologically diagnosted combined endodontic-periodontic lesions

Name Time Method probing pocket depth, measured with computer administrated probe (Florida-Probe) at baseline, as well as 3, 6 and 12 months after therapy

Name Time Method Bleeding on Probing (number of sites with bleeding after Probing) measured with computer adnmistraded probe at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months after therapy, periodontopathogenic bacteria measured with a chairside test at baseline, 2 weeks, 6 and 12 months after therapy, inflammatory markers from gingival cevicular fluid<br><br>
