Inclusion criteria for Disease cases:
1) Children up to 17 years of age presented with suspected septic joint (High-grade fever, joint
line tenderness, limited restriction of joint movements with joint effusion, difficulty in
ambulation).
2) All medium and large joints like hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, and wrist will be included.
(If there are multiple joint involvements, the joint which is more symptomatic and has more
effusion will be used for sample collection)
Inclusion criteria for Disease controls:
1) Children up to 16 years of age presented with multiple joint pain and effusion. (Morning
stiffness, associated small joint involvement in hand and foot, associated with other system
involvement like skin rash, generalized lymph adenopathy or Hepatosplenomegaly)
Inclusion criteria for Healthy controls:
Children up to 17 years of age undergo a procedure that is not related to infection or
intraarticular pathologies. The children who sustained trauma will be of control, but joint
aspiration will be done from the contralateral normal joint.
Exclusion criteria for cases:
1) Parents of the children not willing to give consent/participate.
2) Age >= 18 years.
3) Children sustained any major trauma around the joint in the past 2 months (other joint sites of
the same children may be included) or any tumour around the joint.
Exclusion criteria for both disease and healthy controls:
1) History of recent infection in the past 4 months.
2) Exposed to antibiotics in the past 10 days.
