Patients referred for nephrology consultation meeting following criteria will be eligible for inclusion:
•Patients of either sex more than 12 years of age willing to consent
•Patients with threefold increase in the serum creatinine or GFR decrease by 75 percent or urine output of <0.3 mL/kg per hour for 24 hours, or anuria for 12 hours
•Patients needing emergency dialysis which will include:
-Refractory fluid overload
-Hyperkalemia >6mEq/l unresponsive to medical management
-Signs of uremia, such as pericarditis, neuropathy, or an otherwise unexplained decline in mental status
-Metabolic acidosis (pH less than 7.1)
•Patient under 12 years of age
•Unwilling to consent
