Inclusion Criteria

Patients with deep sternal wound infection after median star notomy.
Compliance with the criteria of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for deep sternal wound infections with purulent secretion from the wound, fever >37.5°C, leukocytosis greater than 10,000/µl or open chest.

Failure to meet the inclusion criteria

Primary Outcome Measures

Quality of life (SF 36), mortality and force reduction (dynamometer measurement) 18 months postoperatively.
Secondary Outcome Measures

The shoulder function (Constant and Murley score), physical examination and lung function (body plethysmography) were performed during the regular clinical follow-up 1.5 years after the plastic reconstruction.
