简要总结
The study aims to examine the effects of pickleball on physical and cognitive function in pre-frail community-dwelling older adults, with a specific focus on advanced gait parameters. By exploring the multi-dimensional benefits of sports-based interventions like pickleball, this research seeks to inform more holistic approaches to pre-frailty management that address the needs of this vulnerable population. We hypothesize that the comprehensive pickleball intervention, integrating physical, cognitive, and social elements, will lead to significant improvements in advanced gait parameters, physical function, cognitive function, and social well-being among pre-frail community-dwelling older adults compared to a control group who maintain the usual lifestyle.

入选标准
- •Participants will be invited based on the following inclusion criteria: (1) aged 65 years or older and residing in the community in Hong Kong, China; (2) no history of depression, chronic disease, degenerative neurologic disease, or hospitalization in the past six months; (3) not illiterate; (4) capable of walking for 30 minutes without assistance; and (5) diagnosed as physical pre-frailty.
- •Frailty will be measured according to the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) criteria, comprising following five components:
- •Unintentional weight loss: Body mass index (BMI) < 18.5 kg/m2 or self-reported unintentional weight loss of 4.5 kg or 5% of body mass in the last year.
- •Slowness: Measured using a 6-meter fast gait speed test. Participants will be timed walking a 6-meter distance twice, and the mean value will be recorded. A gait speed < 0.8 m/s indicates slowness.
- •Weakness: Identified as low handgrip strength (dominant hand), adjusted for sex and BMI: for males: <= 29 kg (BMI <= 24 kg/m^2), <= 30 kg (BMI 24.1–28 kg/m^2), and <= 32 kg (BMI > 28 kg/m^2); for females: <= 17 kg (BMI <= 23 kg/m^2), <= 17.3 kg (BMI 23.1–26 kg/m^2), <= 18 kg (BMI 26.1–29 kg/m^2), and <= 21 kg (BMI > 29 kg/m^2).
- •Exhaustion: Determined by responses of "moderate amount of the time" or "most of the time" in the last week to either of the questions "I felt that everything I did was an effort" and "I could not get going."
- •Low physical activity: Evaluated using a modified International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Weekly caloric expenditure thresholds are set at > 383 kcal for males and >270 kcal for females.
- •Each component is scored as 1 if present and 0 if absent. Total scores range from 0 to 5, categorizing participants as robust (score = 0), pre-frail (score = 1–2), or frail (score = 3–5).
排除标准
- •include: (1) major diseases related to the heart, lungs, liver, or kidneys in the past six months; (2) history of mental illness or serious psychological issues preventing compliance with study commands; (3) hearing or visual impairments that hinder training participation; (4) adverse health events (e.g., death, hospitalization, serious illness, or injury) during the study; (5) assessments as frail or robust according to the Fried frailty phenotype; and (6) participation in other training programs during the study period.
