Age above 35 years.
Conscious, cooperative patient.
ABG findings on room air: pH <7.35, PCO2 >45mmHg, PO2 <60mmHg, SPO2 <92%.
Able to maintain patency of the airway.
Tachypnoea with respiratory rate more than 24/min.
Increased work of breathing (accessory muscle use, pursed lip breathing).
Age below 35 years.
Impaired consciousness (Glasgow coma scale <10).
Impaired cough/ swallowing reflex/ unable to maintain patent airway.
Confusion/ agitation/ severe cognitive impairment.
Severe upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
Hemodynamic instability (on inotropes/shock).
Life threatening hypoxia.
Recent facial or upper airway surgeries.
Facial burns/ trauma.
