All participants enrolled in this study were volunteers who were recruited via posters in our hospital. The informed consent was obtained after explaining the aim, and design of this study. Inclusion criteria were self-reported good general health, being aged 19 to 60 years, sinus rhythm on initial electrocardiography (ECG), and no bruit in carotid artery in direct auscultation before test.
Exclusion criteria were regular medication (other than oral contraceptives), a history of cardiorespiratory disease, a history of syncope, orthostatic hypotension, cerebrovascular accident or transient ischemic attack. Syncope was defined as sudden, complete and transient loss of consciousness and postural tone, with spontaneous recovery. Participants were forbidden to smoke or consume alcohol or caffeine within the 6 hours before examination.
