Documented radiographic changes of osteoarthritis (Kellgren-Lawrence grade > 2) at the time of rheumatologic screeningPalpable synovial swelling on clinical examination.
30 years of age or greater
Pre-randomization VAS score between 4 and 9
Must be taking analgesic or non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents for control of pain
Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, recurrent or active pseudo-gout, cancer or other serious medical condition
History of kidney or liver failure
Oral steroids within the last four weeks
Intra-articular knee depo-corticosteroids within the previous 3 months
Intra-articular hyaluronate within the previous 6 months
Arthroscopy of the knee within the previous year
Significant injury to the knee within the previous 6 months
Rash or open wound over the knee
Structured exercise more than once per week for 20 minutes or longer during the 3 months prior to study entry
Anticipates moving from the area within 18 months of study entry
Anorexiant or other medications known to affect metabolism
Current or planned pregnancy
