Inclusion Criteria

Patients who require a central venous catheter for their type of surgery / in-hospital treatment.

Exclusion Criteria

Surgery / patient treatment without the need of a central venous catheter. Patients were excluded in the case of absent written, informed consent or the inability of understanding the investigation.

(a) Time to successful cannulation of the subclavian vein = access-time (presented in seconds: time from skin-incision to aspiration of blood from the axillary vein).<br>(b) Visibility of the needle (presented as percentage from access-time; data gained by analysis of the stored ultrasound sequences).
