64 adults of both sexes with the American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I or II, aged 18 to 60 years, undergoing elective anterior cervical spine surgery for cervical spondylosis or prolapsed intervertebral disc were enrolled
Exclusion criteria included active smokers (history of smoking any time in past 6 months); preexisting bradycardia (HR below 50/min) or hypotension (systolic arterial pressure less than 100 mm Hg); planned elective ventilation post-operatively; poor respiratory reserve and poor cough reflex; presence of cardiac, renal, hepatic, and respiratory dysfunction; cognitive impairment; pregnancy or breast feeding; known allergy to alpha 2-agonists; and use of beta-blockers, cimetidine, digoxin, alpha 2-agonists or psychotropic medications.
