It was compulsory for the patients to present a pair of class I or II failing restorations (amalgam/composite resin) with cusps partially involved and/or carious lesions on occlusal and/or proximal surfaces. The teeth needed necessarily to be vital as well as the participants were required to be free of edentulous spaces, important occlusal interferences and parafunctional occlusion. The patients were required to be between 18 and 70 years old and to not participate of another clinical study.
It was excluded from the sample those patients with allergy to the materials, cracked teeth, periodontal disease, using chlorexidine at the baseline, tooth sensitivity, antagonist teeth, presenting porcelain restoration as well as a indirect restoration planned to be done. The patients disabled to attend the re-calls as well that present any general health problem existent were not included in the sample.
