Bariatric surgery patients
All patients who underwent bariatric surgery between January 1st 2015 and January 1st 2020 in Rijnstate hospital will be screened for the following eligibility criteria: i) must have undergone bariatric surgery and ii) must have had Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the lumbar spine in the 12 months prior to their surgery and iii) must be willing to undergo one repeat MRI for the purpose of this study.
Patients with normal BMI
A convenience sampling method will be utilised with the aim to recruit patients from Rijnstate hospital i) who have had Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the lumbar spine and ii) had a Body Mass Index of 20 to 25 during the MRI of the lumbar spine and iii) are from the same sex as the patients in the obese group and iiii) have the same age, with a range of 5 years, as the patients in the obese group.
Bariatric surgery patients
A potential subject who meets any of the following criteria will be excluded from participation in this study: i) patients who do not want to participate in this study ii) who do not comply to the inclusion criteria mentioned above and iii) who have a contraindication to MRI scanning implanted metal clips or wires of the type which may concentrate radiofrequency fields or cause tissue damage from twisting in a magnetic field.
Patients with normal BMI
A potential subject who meets any of the following criteria will be excluded from participation in this study: i) patients who do not want to participate in this retrospective study and ii) who do not comply to the inclusion criteria mentioned above.

Name Time Method Primary objective: to evaluate changes in the volume of spinal epidural lipomatosis in the lumbar spine before and after bariatric surgery in patients with obesity.
- Secondary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method Secondary objective: to study the volumetric difference of spinal epidural lipomatosis in the lumbar spine of patients with obesity with a proxy group of patients with normal weight (BMI 20-25).
